Chapter 11

Clara’s fingernails scraped against the plastic casing of the encryption drive protruding from the terminal port, but Raymond moved with surprising agility, slapping her hand away with the heavy spine of a leather-bound legal tome. The tactical operative grappling with Miller near the bookshelf managed to draw a heavy-duty taser, discharging it with a sharp electrical crackle that dropped Miller to the Persian rug with a suppressed groan.
"Ninety-five percent!" Raymond shouted, his body shielding the glowing monitor from Clara’s frantic reach.
Clara snarled, her refined composure completely dissolving as she grabbed a heavy brass paperweight from the desk and raised it high above her head, aiming directly at the terminal’s main circuit housing. "If I can't have the data, nobody will!"
Before she could bring the heavy metal down, Elena reacted with fierce, protective instinct. Remembering the sharp sting of the slap in the hospital room and the months of silent psychological torture, Elena lunged forward, throwing her weight against Clara’s side. The unexpected tackle sent Clara stumbling off balance, her arm deflecting wide as the brass paperweight crashed uselessly into the wooden edge of the desk, shattering a ceramic inkwell instead.
"Don't you ever touch this family again," Elena hissed, using her forearm to push Clara back against the overflowing bookshelves, sending a cascade of heavy law books tumbling to the floor around them.
"Complete!" the terminal chimed softly, a pleasant digital tone that signaled the successful extraction of the master ledger onto the physical encryption drive.
Raymond instantly ripped the drive from the port, slipping it securely into the inner pocket of his tweed vest. He turned to face the remaining tactical operative, who was now raising his weapon toward Elena and Clara as they struggled amidst the fallen books. Before the operative could pull the trigger, the sharp whine of a police siren echoed loudly from the front gates of the estate, followed by the blinding sweep of emergency cruiser lights cutting through the tall arched windows of the study.

"State police!" a bullhorn amplified voice bellowed from the courtyard below. "Drop your weapons and step away from the individuals inside immediately!"
The tactical operative froze, his weapon lowering as the reality of a multi-unit law enforcement response neutralized his corporate immunity. Clara struggled to her feet, her teal dress torn at the shoulder, her dark hair half-unraveled from its bun. Her eyes met Elena’s with a look of pure, unadulterated venom, knowing that the corporate shield protecting her had finally been shattered.
