Chapter 14: A New Horizon

The crisp autumn air of Washington carried the scent of falling leaves and river mist as Elena took a slow, deliberate walk along the secure promenade behind the Georgetown medical facility. Raymond walked step-for-step beside her, offering a steady arm for balance as her due date drew closer by the day. Her reddish-brown hair caught the amber light of the setting sun, and her expression was one of profound serenity.

"The federal trial date for Clara and Dr. Harrison has been formally set for early next month," Raymond informed her gently, ensuring she was not startled by the news. "Their legal team has attempted to negotiate a plea bargain in exchange for cooperating against the remaining shadow investors, but the prosecutor has rightly rejected any deal that doesn't involve substantial prison time."

Elena nodded, her gaze fixed on the horizon where the sun dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in shades of violet and gold. "Let them face a jury of their peers," she said, her voice steady and free of anger. "They chose to operate outside the boundaries of human decency and the law. They deserve whatever justice the court administers."

"You possess a remarkable grace, Elena," Raymond remarked, looking at her with deep admiration. "Most people would have allowed that trauma to consume them. You turned it into armor."

"I didn't do it alone," Elena replied, turning to look at her uncle with a warm, affectionate smile. "If you hadn't answered that phone in the hospital room—if you hadn't believed me when everyone else was calling me paranoid—I wouldn't be standing here today."

"Family protects family," Raymond said simply, patting her hand. "That is a tradition the Vance name will uphold from this day forward."

As they turned back toward the private residence wing of the medical center, a sudden, sharp contraction rippled through Elena’s abdomen. She stopped walking, catching her breath as she gripped Raymond’s arm with a sudden intensity.

Raymond instantly recognized the sign, his eyes widening with a mixture of excitement and calm authority. "Is it time?"

Elena took a deep, steadying breath, feeling the undeniable surge of life preparing to enter the world. The fear that had once defined her hospital stay months ago was entirely absent, replaced by fierce, unadulterated joy. "Yes," she whispered, her voice ringing with clear, resonant strength. "It's time."
