Chapter 4

The heavy oak door swung inward with a resounding crash as the brass handle struck the drywall. Standing in the doorway was Raymond Vance, a tall, imposing man in his late sixties with sharp silver hair, a dark tailored overcoat, and eyes that radiated decades of judicial authority. Flanking him were two private security operatives in plain suits, their broad shoulders blocking the hallway and instantly neutralizing the nurse’s attempt to bar the entrance.
"Step away from my niece," Raymond ordered, his voice dropping into the resonant register he had used for thirty years on the bench. He didn't raise his voice, yet the sheer weight of his presence commanded absolute compliance.
Dr. Harrison took a hasty step backward, his professional composure cracking under the scrutiny of a man who knew every loophole in corporate and medical law. "Judge Vance, this is a private medical intervention. Your niece is experiencing acute paranoia and gestational distress—"
"Save the perjury for a courtroom, Doctor," Raymond interrupted, striding into the room with purposeful steps. His gaze swept over Elena, noting the pale skin, the tousled reddish-brown hair, and most importantly, the angry, reddish bruise blooming across her left cheek. A dark flush of controlled fury darkened his weathered features. He looked past Elena to Clara, who stood frozen near the window, her teal dress suddenly looking less like a symbol of power and more like camouflage for a cornered predator. "And you, Clara. Assaulting a pregnant woman in a clinical setting. I believe the bar association and the district attorney's office will find the security footage from this floor exceptionally interesting."
Clara scoffed, though her hands trembled slightly against her side. "She's unstable, Raymond. The board authorized—"
"The board has no jurisdiction over my ward," Raymond cut her off decisively. He reached the side of the hospital bed, gently placing a warm, steady hand over Elena’s trembling fingers where she still clutched her dark brown leather handbag. The contact grounded her, melting away the lingering terror of the past ten minutes. "Are you alright, sweetheart?"
"They tried to sedate me," Elena whispered, her voice cracking as the emotional dam finally broke. She leaned into her uncle’s presence, letting out a long, shaky breath. "They wanted to take the baby, Uncle Raymond. They were going to forge the signature."

Raymond’s jaw tightened into a rigid line. He turned to the two security guards waiting patiently at the door. " Escort Dr. Harrison and Ms. Vance to the administrative lobby. Ensure they do not touch a single electronic device or medical file on their way out. If security or hospital administration attempts to interfere, call the state police commissioner directly using my direct-line authorization."
Dr. Harrison opened his mouth to protest, but the firm, unyielding grip of the security operative on his elbow silenced him instantly. As the doctor and Clara were marched out of the room under protest, the heavy silence that settled over the sterile space felt like a hard-won victory.
