Chapter 2

The electronic trill of the phone line ringing through the hospital static felt agonizingly slow to Elena as she pressed the device tight against her ear. Across the sterile room, Dr. Harrison lowered his hands slowly, his chest heaving as if he had run a marathon just to reach the doorway. His sharp grey eyes flicked from Elena’s tear-stained face to Clara, who stood rigidly by the bed, her teal satin dress catching the harsh fluorescent light. A silent, terrifying understanding seemed to pass between the doctor and Clara, a shared secret that left no room for coincidence.
"Elena, you are making a grave mistake," Dr. Harrison said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, persuasive register that completely contradicted his earlier panic. He took a cautious step forward, his polished leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the floor tiles. "Your uncle cannot help you here. This facility operates under specific legal frameworks regarding maternal care and family custody transfers. Hanging on to paranoid fantasies will only endanger your pregnancy."
Elena backed away as far as the metal headboard would allow, her hands still cradling her swollen abdomen. The kick Clara had delivered moments ago echoed in her mind, a physical reminder of the violence these people were willing to deploy. "Don't come any closer," Elena whispered into the phone, though her gaze remained fixed on the doctor. "Uncle Raymond, are you there? Please pick up."
A heavy, static-laced sigh came through the speaker, followed by a gruff, familiar voice that grounded Elena amidst the chaos. "I'm here, sweetheart. I'm listening. What is happening?"
Before Elena could detail the assault or Dr. Harrison’s threatening presence, Clara moved with startling speed. She snatched the metal pitcher from the bedside table and slammed it down onto the tray, creating a deafening crash that reverberated through the phone’s microphone.
"Tell him nothing," Clara hissed, stepping directly into Elena’s line of sight, blocking her from the door.
Dr. Harrison seized the distraction, pulling a small silver-capped syringe from his lab coat pocket with practiced stealth. The nurse in the background—the same woman who had watched the initial slap without intervening—suddenly stepped forward, gripping a leather restraint strap from the shelf. The realization hit Elena with sickening clarity: the hospital was not a sanctuary. It was a well-funded trap designed to silence her, isolate her, and steal her child before the birth certificate could ever be printed.

"He's coming," Elena lied into the phone, her voice steadying with a sudden surge of adrenaline. "Uncle Raymond is less than ten minutes away. If anything happens to me or this baby, the federal authorities will have your medical licenses revoked by nightfall."
The doctor’s stride faltered. For a brief second, doubt flickered across his aged features. Clara, however, snarled with absolute contempt, refusing to let the bluff work.
