Chapter 9: The House of Cards

Before Elena could formulate a counter-attack, the heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open wide. Three men in charcoal suits walked briskly into the room, their identities unmistakable. Federal marshals accompanied by the head of Vance Enterprises' internal compliance committee.

The lead marshal stepped forward, flashing a gold badge. "Julian Vance? And Elena Vance?"

Julian nodded slowly, stepping away from the conference table. "I am Julian Vance. That is my wife."

"We’ve received a comprehensive data transmission containing verified financial records and medical tampering logs linked to Vance Enterprises' healthcare division," the marshal stated, his voice professional and devoid of emotion. "We have a federal warrant to secure all physical and digital records on these premises, effective immediately."

Elena stood as still as a statue carved from ice. For the first time, the color drained entirely from her face. Her sharp, demanding expression fractured into a look of absolute disbelief as she realized her empire was disintegrating from the inside out.

"This is an administrative error," Elena said, her voice unnaturally steady as she forced herself into executive posture. "My attorneys will have this injunction dismissed within the hour. You are overstepping your jurisdiction."

"Your attorneys were picked up twenty minutes ago at their downtown office on charges of obstruction and witness tampering," the compliance director spoke up, stepping past the marshals. He looked at Elena with profound disappointment. "Elena, you built this company on brilliance, but you governed it like a tyrant. The board has already voted unanimously to suspend you pending criminal proceedings."

Julian looked down at the sleeping twins in the carrier. The weight of the moment pressed down on his chest, heavy and suffocating, yet oddly liberating. He reached down, lifting the carrier into his arms with gentle, practiced care. He looked at Clara, who stood quietly near the window, watching the unfolding justice with tired eyes.

"Thank you, Clara," Julian said softly.

Clara gave a small, weary nod. "Take care of them, Mr. Vance. They didn't ask for any of this."

As the federal marshals moved toward Elena, reading her rights with calm precision, she did not scream or weep. She simply adjusted her gray suit jacket, cast one last venomous glare at her husband, and walked out of the boardroom with her head held high, a fallen queen retreating into the dark.
