Chapter 2: Shadows of the Maternity Ward

The small black object pressed against Clara’s fingertips felt like an anchor in a raging sea. Her thumb grazed the ridged casing of the micro-drive, a clandestine insurance policy she had created three nights ago when she first intercepted the falsified DNA manifests in the hospital’s administrative archive. The nursery air grew suffocating as the officers stepped forward, heavy boots creaking on the wooden floorboards.
"Step away from the infants, Nurse," the lead officer commanded, his tone flat and devoid of human warmth. "Do not make this harder than it has to be."
Clara kept her expression meticulously neutral, channeling every ounce of professional discipline she possessed. She adjusted her grip on the neutral-colored cloth sling, ensuring the twins—a boy and a girl, barely forty-eight hours old—remained secure against her chest. The boy’s tiny hand brushed her forearm, his skin impossibly soft, grounding her amid the chaos.
"I am not resisting," Clara said softly, her voice barely a whisper above the babies' fading whimpers. "I am simply trying to keep these children calm. They are sensitive to sudden movements."
Julian Vance pushed past the threshold, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the floor. He ignored the police officers, his bewildered eyes locked entirely on Clara’s face. "Elena, what is she talking about? What court order? You told me the surrogate miscarried last week. You said we lost our children."
Elena turned slowly, her fierce expression hardening even further as she faced her husband. The fluorescent lights caught the sharp angles of her gray suit jacket. "I told you what you needed to hear to remain focused, Julian. The surrogate did attempt to breach our contract and flee with the heirs. These children are Vance blood. I had to pull every legal string available to secure our family’s future before this hospital covered up the theft."
Julian shook his head, a dark lock of hair falling across his forehead. "A court order doesn't appear in thirty minutes on a Tuesday morning, Elena. And you never mentioned a surrogate breach to me."
"Because you lack the stomach for hard decisions!" Elena snapped back, her voice echoing off the white walls. "Now, officers, relieve her of the infants."

Two officers flanked Clara immediately, their large hands reaching for the sling. Clara felt the cold metal of a badge brush her shoulder as they pried the fabric away from her chest. She let go slowly, refusing to trigger a panic in the babies, but as the sling transferred to an officer's arms, her hand slipped completely free of her scrub pocket, clutching the small black drive safely hidden inside her closed fist.
