Chapter 13: Facing the Past

The federal courtroom downtown was stark, windowless, and bathed in the harsh glare of fluorescent lighting. Julian sat in the witness box, his dark suit neatly pressed, his expression steady and composed. Across the room, seated at the defense table behind her new court-appointed attorneys, sat Elena Vance. She wore a standard prison jumpsuit instead of her sharp gray suit, her hair loose and unstyled, but her posture remained rigidly defiant. When Julian took the stand, her dark eyes locked onto his with a gaze cold enough to freeze summer rain.
The federal prosecutor, a sharp woman named Hayes, stepped up to the podium. "Mr. Vance, for the record, please describe your role within Vance Enterprises during the fiscal quarters leading up to the surrogate acquisition."
Julian took a deep breath, his voice clear and resonant as it echoed through the quiet courtroom. "I served as the senior financial director, though my primary focus was on domestic operations. For years, I trusted my wife’s executive decisions, believing that her aggressive expansion tactics were standard corporate strategy."
"Did you have any knowledge of the illegal acquisition of the infants currently in your custody?" Hayes asked.
"No," Julian answered firmly, looking directly at the prosecutor, then glancing briefly toward Elena. "I was told the surrogate had miscarried. I was lied to, manipulated, and kept in the dark to ensure I wouldn't interfere with her plans to secure corporate heirs through illicit means."
One of Elena’s defense attorneys stood up, objecting loudly. "Leading the witness, Your Honor. The defense contends that Mr. Vance was an active participant in the corporate restructuring and was fully aware of the subsidiary funding."
"Overruled," the federal judge replied flatly, gesturing for Julian to continue.
Julian turned his gaze back to the judge, his voice unwavering. "My wife built an empire on the premise that power excuses any cruelty. She viewed our children not as human beings to love, but as assets to protect her portfolio. I am here today not to defend my corporate legacy, but to dismantle it, because my children deserve a father of integrity, not an accomplice to tyranny."
Elena’s jaw tightened visibly. For a fraction of a second, a crack appeared in her stoic mask, revealing a flash of genuine shock that her husband—the man she had dominated for a decade—was standing against her with absolute moral clarity.

When Julian stepped down from the stand and walked back to the gallery, he felt a profound sense of release. The ghosts of Vance Tower had finally been brought into the light.
