Chapter 4: Fractured Allegiances

The black town car cut through the dense morning traffic of downtown Chicago, its tinted windows shielding the tense interior from the bustling world outside. In the backseat, the atmosphere was thick enough to choke on. The two newborns slept fitfully in the portable carrier placed between Elena and Julian, lulled by the low hum of the engine.

Elena stared out the window, her gray suit jacket buttoned tightly, her posture rigid. "Taking them to the office is a logistical nightmare, Julian. The board members are already scheduled for the quarterly review at ten. I do not have time for domestic distractions."

"This isn't a domestic distraction, Elena," Julian replied, his eyes fixed on the back of the driver's head. "This is a kidnapping until proven otherwise. You expect me to blindly accept that our surrogate vanished, that a court order was magically expedited at dawn, and that a nurse was holding our children hostage without a single explanation from you? I want answers, and I want them before we step foot into Vance Tower."

Elena turned slowly, her face a mask of controlled fury. "You think I orchestrated this against you? I protected you, Julian. The surrogate was paid off by a rival conglomerate attempting to sabotage our healthcare initiative. If those babies had fallen into the wrong hands, our stock would have cratered before the bell rang this morning. I acted swiftly because you hesitate when it matters most."

Julian turned to look at her, searching her eyes for a flicker of vulnerability, a sign of the woman he had loved for a decade. He found only ice. "You treat our children like corporate assets, Elena. Look at them. They aren't leverage. They're human beings."

"They are the future of Vance Enterprises," she hissed, leaning in close so the driver could not hear. "Act like a father and a partner, or step aside and let me secure our legacy alone."

Miles away, standing in the sterile quiet of the hospital nursery after the police cleared out, Clara pulled her hand from her pocket. The small black encryption drive rested on her palm. She knew Vance Tower was a fortress of concrete, steel, and high-priced lawyers. Getting inside to expose the truth seemed suicidal. Yet, as she looked at the empty white crib, she knew she had no choice. She walked to her locker, grabbed her car keys, and prepared to track the town car across the city.
