Chapter 10: Picking Up the Pieces

The sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the hardwood floors of the penthouse suite. The federal raid had concluded hours ago, leaving the sprawling corporate apartment eerily quiet. The media vans parked on the street below looked like tiny beetles from the seventieth floor, their satellite dishes pointed upward like metal flowers feeding on the scandal.

Julian sat in a plush armchair by the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city lights reflecting in his tired eyes. In his arms, the baby girl slept peacefully, her tiny chest rising and falling in rhythmic unison. Across the room, in a temporary bassinet set up by child protective services, her twin brother rested just as soundly.

The apartment felt cavernous, stripped of its superficial warmth. Without Elena’s driving ambition and cold control, the space finally felt like a home, albeit one haunted by the wreckage of the past.

A soft knock echoed at the private elevator foyer. Julian stood up carefully, laying the baby down in her bassinet with practiced gentleness, and walked across the marble floor. He pressed the button to open the private elevator doors.

Clara stood in the foyer, wearing her civilian clothes—a dark wool coat over a simple sweater. She looked exhausted, the dark circles under her eyes testifying to the emotional toll of the past twenty-four hours.

"Clara," Julian said, surprised. "What are you doing here?"

"I wanted to check on them," Clara said honestly, stepping out of the elevator. Her eyes drifted past Julian to the two bassinets in the center of the room. "The social worker handling the emergency custody placement mentioned you were granted temporary sole guardianship until the surrogate's legal status is resolved."

Julian sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "The courts moved fast once the federal files were decrypted. Elena is being held without bail at the federal detention center downtown. Her legal team has dissolved. It turns out loyalty bought with fear vanishes the moment the empire crumbles."

"Power built on sand always washes away when the tide comes in," Clara said softly, walking over to peer down at the sleeping infants. She gently stroked the baby boy's cheek with the back of her finger. He stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh.

"I don't know how to do this alone, Clara," Julian admitted, his voice cracking slightly with vulnerability. For the first time, the formidable executive facade he had worn for a decade vanished completely, leaving behind a terrified father trying to do right by his children.

"You aren't alone, Mr. Vance," Clara said, looking up to meet his gaze. "You have them. And you have your humanity back. That’s all a father really needs to start over."
