Chapter 7: Confrontation in the Boardroom

Inside the boardroom, the tension had reached a boiling point. Elena stood tall at the head of the long mahogany table, her arms crossed over her matching top, her face a mask of cold fury. "I did what was necessary to protect our market share, Julian. The surrogate tried to extort us for double her contract fee. If I hadn't moved the twins this morning, they would have been used as bargaining chips by our competitors."

Julian slammed his hand onto the table, rattling the crystal water pitchers. "They are human beings, Elena! Not bargaining chips! You didn't protect our family; you protected your portfolio, and you used the police and our own children to do it!"

"Watch your tone," Elena warned, stepping forward. "Without my portfolio, without my drive, you would still be a mid-level analyst living in a cramped apartment. Everything you have, everything we are, is built on my ambition."

"Ambition has a cost, Elena, and I think we've finally reached the bottom of the account," Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy calm. He walked over to the portable carrier, looking down at the sleeping twins. "I'm calling CPS. I'm filing for separation. And I'm auditing every single subsidiary you've touched in the last five years."

Elena laughed, a sharp, humorless sound that echoed off the glass walls. "And who do you think the authorities will believe, Julian? A grieving corporate executive with a history of stress leave, or the CEO who has kept this company afloat through three recessions? You have no proof of anything."

At that exact moment, the frosted glass doors at the end of the boardroom pushed open with a soft sweep.

Elena and Julian both whipped their heads toward the entrance. Standing in the doorway, wearing a dark trench coat over light blue scrubs, was Clara. Her dark hair was slightly disheveled, but her eyes were burning with absolute, unwavering clarity.

"He doesn't need proof from you, Mrs. Vance," Clara said, stepping fully into the boardroom. "Because I have all of it right here."

Elena froze, her predatory instincts flaring instantly. She reached for her desk phone to alert building security, but Julian stepped between his wife and the nurse, his hand raised to stop her.

"Let her speak, Elena," Julian commanded, his voice trembling with a terrifying authority. "Let her speak."
