Chapter 9: Shadows of Truth

Autumn arrived, painting the estate’s surrounding woods in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and crimson. The air turned crisp, and late afternoon light cast long, dramatic shadows across the marble floors of the main library.

Ethan sat at his father’s old oak desk, going through old archival boxes from the estate's storage vaults. He was searching for original blueprints to convert part of the east wing into a community arts center—a project he had recently pitched to the board.

As he lifted a heavy stack of property deeds, a small velvet-bound photo album fell from between the pages. It looked older than the rest of the paperwork, its edges worn by time.

Curious, Ethan opened the album. Inside were photographs from thirty years ago—pictures of his father in his youth, standing alongside a young woman with a radiant, gentle smile. Ethan froze. The woman was not his mother, nor was she Victoria.

He turned the page. There was an entry written in his father’s unmistakable handwriting: 'June 1994. The true light of my youth. Forgiven, but never forgotten.'

Attached to the next page was a legal birth certificate copy and a small photograph of a baby girl. Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs as his eyes scanned the names listed on the official document.

The mother's name was Evelyn Vance—Sarah’s late mother.

Ethan pulled the document closer to the lamp light, reading the entry again to make sure his eyes weren't deceiving him. The child recorded on the document was Sarah.

A sudden wave of realization washed over him. Sarah wasn't just a maid hired by chance five years ago. She was his half-sister—his father's secret daughter from a young, long-forgotten relationship before his arranged marriage.

Ethan leaned back in the heavy leather chair, holding the fading photograph in his trembling hands. The piece of the puzzle that had been missing for decades had finally fallen into place.
