Chapter 1: The Line in the Marble

The atmosphere in the grand living room froze into brittle ice. Victoria lowered her hand, her rings catching the sterile light of the chandelier, but her aristocratic posture faltered under Ethan’s shadow. She tried to muster her usual cold authority, forcing a bitter smile to her lips.

""Ethan, don't be ridiculous,"" Victoria said, her voice carrying a nervous tremor despite her polished tone. ""She is a maid's child. She has no right touching your late mother’s Steinway. You know how delicate the wood is, how sacred this house remains.""

Ethan did not answer immediately. He slowly stepped between Victoria and the small figure curled on the cold polished marble. Below him, Sarah—the maid—clutched four-year-old Lily against her chest. The little girl’s shoulders trembled, silent tears soaking into Sarah’s grey apron. Ethan looked down at the child’s small, bruised fingers.

""This piano belonged to my mother,"" Ethan said, his voice quiet, low, and terrifyingly calm. ""And my mother taught me that music belongs to anyone with a heart to feel it.""

He turned fully toward Victoria. The silence of the mansion seemed to shrink around them. Victoria took a half-step back, her pearl necklace catching her breath as she noticed the dark file folder tucked tightly under Ethan’s arm.

""You have confused discipline with cruelty for far too long, Victoria,"" Ethan continued, his eyes cold and unwavering. ""This house may carry my father's name, but it will no longer host your malice.""

""I am the mistress of this estate!"" Victoria snapped, her composure cracking into sharp rage. ""Your father left me in charge of the household staff and management! You cannot speak to me this way!""

""Management does not grant you ownership of human dignity,"" Ethan replied softly. He extended a hand down toward Sarah. The maid looked up, her eyes red and wide with disbelief. In eight years of working in the mansion, no member of the family had ever offered her a hand.

""Get up, Sarah,"" Ethan whispered. ""Take Lily to the garden wing. No one in this house will ever raise a hand or a voice to either of you again.""

Sarah swallowed hard, nodding rapidly as she gathered the trembling girl into her arms and stood. Victoria watched in disbelief as the servant stepped behind the heir of the estate. The power dynamic that had defined the house for two decades shifted in a single breath.
