Chapter 8: The First Lesson

Three weeks passed. The estate had settled into a gentle, productive rhythm. The heavy silence that used to hang in the hallways was replaced by the soft hum of daily life and, most noticeably, the sound of music.
Every Tuesday afternoon, Ethan reserved two hours to personally teach Lily the fundamentals of the piano. He had bought her a small wooden footstool so her legs wouldn't dangle awkwardly off the bench, and simple sheet music books lay neatly beside the grand Steinway.
""Remember, Lily,"" Ethan said, leaning down to demonstrate a smooth finger movement. ""You don't press the key with your whole arm. Let the weight of your finger fall naturally, like rain hitting a leaf.""
Lily watched intently, her bright brown eyes tracking every movement of his hands. She carefully positioned her tiny fingers and pressed the key. A rich, perfectly weighted tone resonated through the room.
""Perfect,"" Ethan praised with a warm smile. ""See how much sweeter it sounds when you don't force it?""
From the doorway, Sarah watched the interaction. She held a basket of freshly folded linens, but her hands had gone still. Seeing the high-powered corporate heir patiently guiding a maid's daughter filled her heart with a profound sense of peace.
""She looks up to you so much, Mr. Ethan,"" Sarah said softly as she stepped into the room.
Ethan looked up and smiled. ""She's a natural student, Sarah. She listens not just with her ears, but with her mind. She reminds me of how my mother used to sit with me when I was struggling.""

""I can never repay you for what you're doing for her,"" Sarah whispered. ""You gave us safety when we had nothing.""
""You gave my father comfort when he was lonely,"" Ethan replied gently. ""We are even, Sarah. In fact, I think I am the one who gained a family in this big, empty house.""
