Chapter 6: The Departure
Two days later, a black town car pulled up to the front entrance of the mansion. The sky was clear, and a gentle breeze rustled the maple trees along the long driveway.
Victoria walked down the grand marble staircase for the last time. She wore a tailored beige suit, her posture rigid, but her face showed the exhaustion of defeat. Two drivers carried her sleek designer suitcases to the trunk of the car.
Ethan stood near the heavy oak doors, his arms folded across his chest, waiting.
Victoria stopped a few paces in front of him. For a moment, the old cold spark flickered in her eyes, but it quickly faded into quiet resignation.
""You've dismantled everything I spent fifteen years building,"" Victoria said, her tone bitter yet quiet. ""The staff no longer fears authority. The estate will lose its prestige.""
""Fear is not authority, Victoria,"" Ethan answered, his voice firm and clear. ""It is merely control born out of insecurity. Prestige built on cruelty is worthless.""
Victoria looked past Ethan into the foyer, where Sarah and several other housekeepers stood quietly. They were no longer cowering or bowing their heads; they stood with dignity, watching her leave.
""The board approved the settlement,"" Ethan added, handing her a final thick envelope. ""Your personal funds have been untangled from the charity account. You will have enough to live comfortably in the city. But you will have no further role in this estate or its foundation.""

Victoria took the envelope. She looked as if she wanted to say something sharp, but the words died in her throat. She looked at the grand house one last time—the towering columns, the sparkling marble, the beautiful piano resting in the distant sunlight—and realized that despite all her years here, she had never truly belonged.
Without another word, she turned and walked down the stone steps, getting into the back seat of the car. As the vehicle drove down the long driveway, a collective sigh of relief seemed to pass through the entire estate.
