Chapter 5: Echoes of Harmony

By noon, the atmosphere in the estate had undergone a profound shift. Victoria had confined herself to her room, surrounded by suitcases and legal advisors, her reign of terror effectively ended. Meanwhile, the household staff worked with a lighter step, smiles returning to faces that had worn anxiety for years.
In the main living room, Ethan sat on the long piano bench. He opened the polished lid and struck a soft, open chord. The deep notes echoed through the high ceilings, warm and inviting.
Lily stood a few feet away, watching attentively. Encouraged by Ethan’s gentle smile, she slowly stepped forward and climbed up onto the bench beside him.
""Have you ever played a full song before?"" Ethan asked softly.
Lily shook her head. ""Mom sang to me. I tried to find the notes on the keys.""
""Show me,"" Ethan encouraged, leaning back to give her space.
With small, careful fingers, Lily pressed down on a middle C. The note rang clear and true. She hesitated, looking up at Ethan to see if she was doing something wrong. Ethan nodded with an encouraging grin. She pressed the neighboring key, then another, slowly reconstructing a simple lullaby melody her mother often sang.
Ethan joined in smoothly, adding a rich, warm bass chord underneath her simple melody. The combination of the high, clear notes and the deep resonance filled the grand room with a beautiful, harmonious sound.
Sarah stood near the door frame, watching her daughter play alongside the master of the house. Tears welled in her eyes, but this time they were tears of immense relief and hope. For years, she had worked in fear, constantly worried that one mistake would leave her and her child homeless. Now, in this vast, expensive house, she finally felt a sense of peace.
Ethan looked across the room at Sarah and gave a respectful nod. ""She has a natural ear, Sarah. With proper lessons, she could be extraordinary.""

""I could never afford music lessons, sir,"" Sarah said softly, stepping closer.
""You won't have to,"" Ethan replied firmly. ""Consider it part of this house's new tradition. Knowledge and beauty should be shared, not guarded.""
