Chapter 2: Unspoken Debts

The garden wing of the estate was quiet, bathed in the soft amber glow of late afternoon. Sunlight filtered through the French doors, casting warm patterns across the hardwood floors. It was a stark contrast to the cold, intimidating grandeur of the main hall.

Ethan walked into the sunroom carrying a tray with two cups of warm tea and a glass of milk. Sarah sat on the velvet sofa, softly humming a lullaby as Lily rested her head on her lap. The little girl’s breathing had finally calmed, though her eyelashes were still wet with unshed tears.

""Here,"" Ethan said gently, placing the tray on the low coffee table. He sat down on the armchair across from them, relinquishing the formal stance he maintained in front of Victoria.

""Mr. Ethan, you shouldn't..."" Sarah started, rising slightly out of habit and fear of breaking protocol.

""Sit, please,"" Ethan interrupted with a soft, reassuring gesture. ""Inside these rooms, you are not a maid, and I am not your employer. We are simply human beings.""

Sarah settled back onto the cushion, her hands shaking as she held the warm mug. ""Thank you... for back there. Lady Victoria has always been strict, but today... I feared she would dismiss us onto the streets.""

Ethan’s gaze softened. He looked at Lily, who was peering out from behind her mother’s arm with large, curious brown eyes. ""My father brought you to work here five years ago, didn't he?""

""Yes, sir,"" Sarah replied quietly. ""My husband had just passed away in the factory accident. I had nowhere to go, no savings, and a newborn. Your father gave me a job and a roof over our heads. I'll always be grateful to him.""

""My father was a complicated man,"" Ethan said, his tone carrying a tinge of sorrow. ""He was distant, often cold, but he believed in duty. Before he passed away last year, he left me a ledger. A private journal he kept away from Victoria.""

Sarah looked up, her brow furrowing slightly. ""A ledger?""

Ethan reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black leather notebook. ""My father wrote that during his final months, the only genuine kindness he experienced in this sterile house was the tea you brought him every evening, and the small drawings Lily left by his bedside. He knew Victoria was siphoning funds and abusing the staff. He asked me to set things right.""

Sarah’s eyes filled with fresh tears, not of fear this time, but of quiet overwhelmed emotion. ""He... he noticed?""

""He noticed everything,"" Ethan said gently. ""And so have I.""
