Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Nursery

The heavy mahogany doors of the estate felt less like a sanctuary and more like a tomb. Outside, the autumn wind howled against the cliffside, throwing sheets of rain against the tall windows.

Downstairs in the private study, Arthur Vance was reviewing encrypted bank ledgers under the pale light of a desk lamp. Clara stood near the fireplace, watching the flames crackle, while Eleanor sat rigid in her leather wingback chair.

"Victoria's statement was specific," Arthur explained, pushing his glasses up his nose. "She received internal security passes to Clara’s personal office at the foundation from someone with master administrative clearance. Only four people hold those credentials: Ethan, Eleanor, Harold... and Beatrice."

Clara felt a chill that had nothing to do with the drafts in the old house. Beatrice was Eleanor’s younger sister, Clara’s seemingly eccentric, quiet aunt-in-law who managed the Mitchell Charitable Foundation and had personally helped Clara design the nursery at the downtown penthouse.

"Beatrice wouldn't have the stomach for this," Eleanor said coldly, though her knuckles turned white against her cane.

"She didn't need a stomach, Eleanor," a quiet, dry voice echoed from the shadowed hallway.

Beatrice stepped into the study. She wore a simple gray knitted sweater, her gray hair pinned back loosely, holding a brass key in her hand. Behind her, two estate guards stood motionless—not restraining her, but flanking her like personal retainers.

"Beatrice," Eleanor said, rising slowly. "What have you done?"

"I tried to save this family from another generation of tragedy," Beatrice said, her voice disturbingly calm. "You and Richard ruined Ethan with your cold, corporate expectations. When he brought Clara in, an outsider with no lineage, you thought you could tame her. But I saw what Harold was planning."

"You conspired with Harold?" Clara whispered, stepping back toward the mantle.

"Harold was going to destroy Ethan regardless," Beatrice said, looking at Clara with pitying eyes. "I simply ensured that when the fall happened, the foundation assets—and the legal guardianship of your unborn children—would be diverted to a neutral trust. Under my control. Away from the toxic Mitchell name."

"You set me up as an unfit mother," Clara breathed, horror washing over her. "You helped Victoria fake those medical and financial trails so you could claim custody when the scandal broke."

"I was going to give them a peaceful life!" Beatrice shouted, her composure cracking into hysterical grief. "Away from Eleanor's greed! Away from Ethan's instability!"

Suddenly, the French doors leading to the terrace shattered inward. Rain and wind exploded into the room as Ethan, drenched and bleeding from glass cuts on his arms, barreled inside.
