Chapter 14 - Fire and Blood

The reinforced security door shuddered under a violent hydraulic breach. The frame buckled with an ear-splitting screech of tearing metal.
Marcus and his men fired through the opening as two masked mercenaries in tactical gear forced their way through the dust and smoke. Gunfire roared in the enclosed marble hallway, deafening and brutal.
"Clara, get into the panic room!" Ethan shouted, pulling her toward the concealed steel door disguised within the library bookshelf.
"Ethan, no! Come with me!" Clara cried out, clinging to his arm.
"The manual locking mechanism can only be engaged from the outside control console if the primary power grid is down," Ethan said with terrifying calmness. "I have to seal it from here."
"No! Ethan, please!"
"I love you, Clara. I have always loved you," Ethan said, pressing his lips firmly against hers in a fierce, breathless kiss. Before she could protest, he gently pushed her inside the reinforced vault and hit the emergency override switch.
The thick titanium door slammed shut with a heavy mechanical click, sealing Clara into a soundproof, bulletproof sanctuary.
Through the small ballistic-glass viewport, Clara pounded her fists against the door, screaming his name.
Outside in the library, Ethan turned to face the wreckage of his home. Marcus was down, clutching a wounded shoulder. Through the smoke strode Harold Mitchell, his suit torn, clutching a heavy automatic pistol, his eyes bloodshot with manic rage.
"Look at you, Ethan," Harold sneered, raising the barrel toward Ethan’s chest. "The brilliant CEO, reduced to dying in a ruined hallway for an ungrateful woman."
"This was never about Clara," Ethan said coldly, not backing down an inch, stepping directly into Harold's line of fire to block the vault viewport. "This was about your lifelong mediocrity. You couldn't beat my father, and you couldn't beat me."
Harold’s face twisted in fury. "Die like your father, then!"
Harold pulled the trigger.
A shot echoed through the penthouse—sharp, deafening, and final. But it wasn't Ethan who collapsed.
Harold staggered backward, a red blossom spreading across his chest, his weapon slipping from his lifeless fingers as he crashed onto the shattered marble. Behind him stood Eleanor Mitchell, clutching an antique pearl-handled revolver, smoke curling from the barrel, her eyes colder than ice.
"No one threatens my grandchildren, Harold," Eleanor whispered.
Ethan dropped to his knees, his hand pressing against his side where a stray bullet had grazed his ribs. He dragged himself toward the vault controls and punched in the release code.
The titanium door slid open. Clara rushed out, falling to her knees and throwing her arms around Ethan’s neck, weeping hysterically as his blood stained her sweater.

"I'm here," Ethan wheezed, wrapping his arms around her tightly. "I'm right here, Clara. It's over."
