Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth in Gray Scale

The hum of the sonogram monitor was the only sound piercing the sterile air of Room 304. Clara rested her trembling palms against the swell of her belly, the slick gel chilling her fevered skin. For three torturous months, Ethan had looked through her rather than at her, poisoned by whispered rumors and orchestrated doubts. He had called her a liar, a schemer, an unfaithful wife carrying another man’s bloodline.
At the door stood Victoria, Ethan’s glamorous executive assistant, lips curved in a subtle, victorious smirk. Victoria had spent weeks slipping anonymous tips and tampered calendar entries into Ethan’s briefcase, painting Clara as a traitor. Ethan stood beside her, jaw clamped shut, arms crossed over his chest like armor. He had dragged Clara to this high-end private clinic to end the charade, demanding an indisputable paternity test timeline.
"Dr. Hayes," Ethan’s voice cut like rusted iron, "don't sugarcoat it. Confirm the gestational age so we can finalize the divorce."
Dr. Hayes did not flinch. Her eyes narrowed behind her wire-rimmed glasses as she pressed the transducer firmly against Clara’s abdomen. She swiveled the 4K display toward the doorway. Two distinct, fluttering gray forms pulsed inside Clara’s womb—two miniature heartbeats dancing in perfect synchronicity.
"Mr. Mitchell," Dr. Hayes said coldly, her tone stripping away his arrogant composure. "Before you cast another stone at your wife, look closely at this screen."
Victoria’s smirk dissolved. Ethan took a step forward, his boot heavy against the linoleum. "What am I looking at?"
"Dichorionic diamniotic twins," Dr. Hayes declared, tapping the glass. "Conceived precisely nineteen weeks ago, during the week of your anniversary trip to Lake Como. And more importantly, fraternal twins run exclusively through the Mitchell paternal line—a genetic marker passed down by your late father."
Clara watched Ethan’s face lose every drop of color. The arrogant sneer collapsed into a hollow, disbelieving stare.

"Twins?" Ethan whispered, his knees buckling slightly. He reached out toward the bed, but before his fingers could graze the linen, Victoria's phone chimed with a frantic message from the family lab.
