Chapter 12 - Broken Mirrors

Four weeks passed in a delicate, fragile truce.

Ethan adhered strictly to Clara’s boundaries. He attended every medical appointment, standing quietly in the corner, taking meticulous notes on Clara’s dietary needs, blood pressure readings, and sleep schedule. At the Mitchell Group, he led an absolute purge of Harold’s loyalists, reshaping the executive board to guarantee Clara and the twins unconditional majority equity.

Yet, between them, an invisible wall of ice remained.

One evening, during a violent rainstorm that triggered memories of the Lake Como trip, Clara felt a sudden wave of dizziness. She reached for the bathroom counter, but her grip slipped, sending a heavy glass vase crashing to the marble floor.

Ethan appeared within seconds, barefoot, panic etched across his features. "Clara!"

He skidded across the floor, catching her by the waist just as her knees gave out. He lifted her effortlessly, carrying her away from the jagged shards of glass, and laid her gently on the chaise lounge in the bedroom.

"Breathe. Just breathe, I've got you," Ethan murmured frantically, kneeling beside her. He grabbed a damp towel, gently dabbing her forehead. "Where does it hurt? Are there contractions?"

"No," Clara panted, clutching her chest. "Just... sudden vertigo. The doctor said low iron could cause it."

Ethan held her hand firmly, rubbing small, soothing circles into her palm. For the first time in months, Clara didn't pull away. She looked down at him. The arrogant billionaire who once commanded boardrooms with an iron fist looked utterly fragile, his hands trembling as he checked her pulse.

"I thought I lost you back there," Ethan whispered, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "Every time you stumble, my heart stops. I keep waking up in the middle of the night thinking about the clinic... thinking about how close I came to losing all three of you because of my disgusting pride."

Clara touched his jaw, feeling the rough stubble. "Ethan."

He looked up, desperate.

"You are working hard to be a father," Clara said softly. "I see it. The twins will know you love them."

Ethan’s breath hitched. "And you, Clara? Will you ever let me love you again?"

Clara looked into his tormented eyes, the silence stretching between them. Just as she was about to answer, her phone on the nightstand buzzed with an urgent notification from Marcus.

"Mr. Mitchell," Marcus’s voice sounded tense through the speakerphone. "Harold’s transport van was ambushed on the way to the federal detention facility. Harold is missing."
