Chapter 13 - The Wolf at the Door

The penthouse went into immediate military-grade lockdown.

Steel security shutters rolled down over the panoramic glass windows, sealing the luxury apartment from the outside world. Marcus and four armed operatives took positions in the elevator vestibule and service stairwells.

Clara sat on the living room sofa, her hands resting protectively over the twins, who were kicking restlessly against the sudden tension in the room.

"Harold has no financial assets left," Ethan paced the room, a secure satellite phone pressed to his ear. "Every account linked to his name has been frozen by federal marshals. Who funded the extraction team?"

"We believe he had an off-the-books partnership with an overseas syndicate he used for money laundering," Arthur Vance reported via conference call. "Harold knows his life is effectively over. He’s cornered, Ethan. And a cornered animal doesn't seek escape—it seeks revenge."

Ethan hung up the phone and walked over to Clara, kneeling before her. The panic that had plagued him in recent weeks had evaporated, replaced by a cold, protective clarity.

"I won't let him touch you, Clara," Ethan said, his voice deep and steady. "I failed you before because I listened to ghosts. I won't fail you tonight."

Clara looked at him, seeing for the first time the man she had fallen in love with—not the paranoid heir, but the fierce protector who would burn down the world to keep his family safe.

"Ethan, be careful," she whispered, her fingers curling around the fabric of his shirt. "The babies need their father."

Ethan pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her knuckles, his eyes fierce. "I'll be right outside this door."

At 2:40 AM, the lights throughout the entire block flickered and died. The backup generator in the penthouse hummed to life, but within thirty seconds, the emergency sirens began to wail.

The service elevator indicator flashed red. The cables had been overridden from the building's maintenance sub-level.

A heavy metallic crash echoed from the foyer’s reinforced steel doors. Harold Mitchell’s voice, raspy and warped with madness, boomed through the intercom system.
