Chapter 6 - The Matriarch's Verdict

Eleanor Mitchell did not enter a room; she conquered it. At sixty-five, the matriarch of the Mitchell dynasty was wrapped in tailored cashmere, her silver hair styled into an immaculate chignon, her cane striking the hospital floor with rhythmic authority.
Behind her walked Arthur Vance, the family’s lead corporate attorney for thirty years.
Ethan stood up immediately, adopting a defensive posture in front of Clara’s bed. "Mother. You shouldn't be here. Clara needs absolute rest."
Eleanor ignored her son entirely, stepping directly to the bedside. Her sharp blue eyes traveled from Clara’s pale face down to the pronounced curve beneath the blanket. For a long, agonizing minute, the room was suspended in complete silence.
"Fraternal twins," Eleanor finally spoke, her voice smooth like aged bourbon. "Harold called me in Geneva claiming you were faking the pregnancy to stall the trust distribution. He swore on his brother’s grave that you had cuckolded my son."
"Mother, Harold orchestrated the whole thing—" Ethan began, but Eleanor raised a gloved hand, cutting him off instantly.
"I know Harold is a snake, Ethan. He was born one, and he will die one," Eleanor said coldly. She turned back to Clara. "What I want to know is why you, Clara, stayed silent while my son tore through our family reputation like an undisciplined child."
Clara met the older woman’s gaze without blinking. "Because your son didn't ask for explanations, Eleanor. He issued verdicts. I wasn't going to beg for dignity from a man who had already convicted me in his mind."
A faint, approving twitch touched Eleanor’s lips. She turned to Arthur Vance. "Arthur. The paperwork."
Vance opened a leather briefcase, pulling out a thick manila folder. "Mrs. Mitchell—the elder Mrs. Mitchell—has exercised her supreme veto power over the family trust board. Under clause twelve of the Mitchell charter, Harold’s voting shares are immediately frozen pending the outcome of the criminal fraud investigation regarding Ms. Cole."
Ethan let out a breath he seemed to have held for hours. "Thank you, Mother."
"Don't thank me, Ethan," Eleanor snapped, turning on him with icy precision. "I protected the Mitchell bloodline and this company. I did not protect you. Harold was able to move because you were weak. You let an assistant poison your mind against your pregnant wife."
Eleanor leaned down, looking Clara straight in the eye. "My son is an idiot, Clara. But the children you carry belong to this family’s legacy. Tomorrow, you move into the North Shore estate under my personal protection. Without Ethan."
Ethan’s face twisted in shock. "What? No! She stays with me!"

"She goes where she is safe," Eleanor said, turning toward the door. "And right now, Ethan, the greatest danger to Clara's peace is you."
