Chapter 9: A Crack in the Armor

That evening, after the kitchen had been thoroughly bleached and the remaining food packed into the walk-in cooler, Chloe sat alone on the back loading dock.

The rain had stopped, leaving the wet alleyway shimmering under the amber glow of a single streetlamp. Chloe stared at her sneakers, her shoulders slumped under the heavy weight of exhaustion.

The metal door creaked open, and Eleanor walked out, holding two ceramic mugs of hot chamomile tea. She handed one to Chloe and sat down on the wooden crate beside her.

"You handled him well today," Eleanor remarked quietly, taking a sip from her mug.

Chloe let out a self-deprecating scoff. "I used to be just like him, Eleanor. Loud, arrogant, exploiting anyone and anything just to keep people looking at me. I thought if I stopped making noise, I’d stop existing."

"Why did you start?" Eleanor asked gently. "Before the designer clothes and the viral scandals. What were you looking for?"

Chloe closed her eyes, feeling the warm steam from the tea hit her face.

"When I was sixteen, my parents went through an ugly divorce," Chloe whispered, the memories rising unbidden. "Suddenly we had no money, our friends vanished, and it felt like my entire life had been erased overnight. I started posting online because whenever a stranger liked a photo or left a comment, it felt like proof that I still mattered. But the numbers never felt like enough. Ten thousand became a hundred thousand. A hundred thousand became a million. The more followers I had, the more terrified I was of becoming invisible again."

Eleanor nodded slowly, her expression softening with genuine empathy.

"Attention is a drug, Chloe. It feeds your ego, but it starves your soul," Eleanor said. "You don't need a million strangers to tell you you're worthy. You just need to look in the mirror and respect the person looking back at you."

Chloe looked at Eleanor, tears stinging her eyes. "I don't know if I can ever fix the damage I did."

May you like

"You can't change the past," Eleanor replied, placing a warm hand on Chloe's shoulder. "But you can decide what you build with the wreckage."
