Chapter 7: The Shadow of the Past

By the end of her fourth week, Chloe’s hands were calloused, her posture was grounded, and the constant digital twitch in her thumbs had finally begun to fade.
She had learned the names of the regulars: Mr. Henderson, a retired mechanic who loved extra pepper on his soup; Maria, a mother of three who always asked for an extra apple for her youngest daughter; and Leo, a quiet teenager studying for his GED in the corner booth while nursing a hot cup of tea.
Chloe arrived every day at dawn without complaint, scrubbed the heavy industrial grease traps until they shone, and helped Rosa manage the dry goods inventory.
Then, on a rainy Thursday afternoon, the past came crashing back.
A flashy silver luxury sports car pulled up onto the sidewalk directly outside St. Jude’s. The door opened, and out stepped Trey Lawson—a hyper-viral prank YouTuber with twelve million subscribers, accompanied by two cameramen holding gimbal rigs and directional microphones.
Chloe felt her stomach drop through the floorboards.
Trey had been one of Chloe’s closest "friends" in the creator space. They had shared VIP tables at clubs, collaborated on clickbait videos, and traded shoutouts for mutual growth.
Trey kicked open the front doors of the community kitchen, a wide, predatory grin on his face, pointing directly at Chloe as his cameraman pushed forward.
"WHAT IS UP, SQUAD!" Trey yelled at the top of his lungs, causing several startled patrons to drop their spoons. "We found her! The internet’s biggest clout-chaser, working the soup line for community service! Look at the fallen queen!"

The camera zoomed straight into Chloe’s face, the high-intensity LED light blinding her in the dim dining room.
