Chapter 6: The Unseen

The line of patrons stretched out the door and around the block.

There were elderly veterans with weathered faces and worn coats, single mothers holding toddlers wrapped in thick wool blankets, and young men who looked no older than Chloe, their eyes clouded with the quiet fatigue of living on the edge of survival.

Chloe was assigned to the main serving station, ladling hot beef stew into plastic bowls.

At first, she kept her head down, terrified that someone might recognize her face from the viral scandal that had trended worldwide just a week before. But as the minutes stretched into hours, she realized a humbling truth: none of these people cared about internet drama. They weren't living inside the algorithmic echo chamber of social media; they were fighting to make it through another day.

"Thank you, darling," a frail woman in her late seventies whispered as Chloe handed her a warm tray. The woman’s hands were knobby with arthritis, yet she held Chloe’s wrist gently for a brief second. "God bless your kind heart."

Chloe froze.

*Kind heart.* The words felt like a physical slap across the face. Just a week ago, she had intentionally tried to frame an innocent woman and ruin her livelihood just for sixty seconds of internet fame. She had felt clever, powerful, and unstoppable. Now, standing behind a plain plastic tray, being thanked by a woman who had nothing, a deep, unfamiliar knot formed in Chloe's throat.

For the first time in years, Chloe felt genuine, burning shame—not because she had been caught, but because of who she had chosen to become.

She swallowed down the lump, forced a soft, humble smile, and ladled another bowl. "You're welcome, ma'am. Please take an extra roll."

From across the kitchen, Eleanor watched the exchange silently, her arms crossed, noting the subtle shift in Chloe's posture.
