Chapter 3: The Drop

The heavy steel door of the precinct interrogation room clicked shut, cutting off the relentless chaos of the city outside.

Chloe sat shivering on a cold metal chair, her glamorous sequined dress now looking utterly absurd under the harsh fluorescent lighting. Across the stainless steel table sat her manager, Marcus, his face pale and eyes bloodshot from staring at his phone for four straight hours.

"How bad is it?" Chloe whispered, hugging her arms tightly around her chest.

Marcus let out a hollow, bitter laugh. "How bad? Chloe, your phone has been blowing up so fast the battery died twice. Every brand deal you signed in the last eighteen months pulled out before the livestream even finished buffering. Sephora, NovaGlow, the Milan fashion week pass—gone. Erased."

Chloe buried her face in her hands. "It was just supposed to be a stunt! Influencers stage confrontations all the time for PR! Nobody was supposed to actually get hurt!"

"You didn't just stage a confrontation with a random shopper, you idiot," Marcus hissed, leaning across the table. "Do you have any idea who Eleanor Sterling actually is?"

Chloe lifted her tear-streaked face, eyeliner smudged into dark streaks down her cheeks. "She’s... some rich socialite?"

"She isn't just a socialite. Eleanor Sterling is the founder and majority shareholder of Sterling Global Philanthropy and the primary benefactor of three major hospital wings in the state," Marcus said, running a trembling hand through his hair. "She doesn't do media drama. She doesn't fight on TikTok. Her legal team is already filing charges for criminal framing, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. They aren't asking for a public apology, Chloe. They’re asking for jail time."

The door opened, and a stern public defender walked in, dropping a thick manila folder onto the table.

"Ms. Chloe Vance?" the lawyer asked flatly. "I reviewed the security footage and the digital stream. You have no legal defense on the criminal misdemeanor and reckless endangerment counts. But Mrs. Sterling’s private counsel just sent over an unusual stipulation."

Chloe looked up, a faint spark of desperate hope igniting in her chest. "A settlement? Money? I have some savings—"

"Not money," the lawyer said, sliding a single sheet of paper toward her. "Mrs. Sterling has offered to withhold filing formal civil suits and will request community diversion instead of county jail on one strict condition."

Chloe leaned forward, squinting through her blurred vision at the bold terms at the bottom of the page.
