Chapter 2: The Replay

The silence inside the boutique became deafening.
Eleanor held the tablet flat, tilting the crystal-clear display directly into Chloe’s smartphone camera lens. With a single tap of Eleanor's manicured thumb, the high-definition security feed began to roll.
The angle was wide, ultra-crisp, and unyielding.
On the screen, timestamped precisely four minutes earlier, the CCTV captured Eleanor standing at the showcase, listening patiently to a clerk. Just behind her, Chloe could be seen pretending to browse a nearby silk scarf rack. But as Eleanor turned her head to inspect a clutch, Chloe’s reflection in the glass tellingly betrayed her. Chloe had slipped behind Eleanor, reached swiftly into her own designer purse, pulled out a miniature crocodile cardholder, and dropped it cleanly into Eleanor’s deep coat pocket.
Chloe’s heart plummeted into her stomach.
The chat, which had been cheering Chloe on just seconds earlier, completely reversed direction with terrifying momentum.
*'Wait... DID CHLOE PLANT THAT?!'* *'SHE FRAMED HER FOR CLOUT?!'* *'SCREENRECORDING THIS RN LMFAOOOO'* *'Cancel her! That's literally a felony!'*
"Wait..." Chloe’s voice cracked, the rehearsed confidence vanishing in an instant. Her throat seized as she looked from the screen up toward the ceiling, noticing for the first time the multi-directional 360-degree dome cameras embedded seamlessly into the boutique’s recessed lighting. "That's... that’s just a misunderstanding. The angle—it makes it look like—"
"You wanted to destroy my reputation to build yours," Eleanor interrupted. Her tone wasn't furious; it was icy, calculated, and terrifyingly calm. "You wanted a million views. Now let’s see how many views you get explaining grand larceny and defamation to the district attorney."
A heavy set of footsteps echoed across the polished white marble.
From the boutique’s private VIP corridor, a towering security chief stepped into view, his hand resting formally on his belt. Behind him, two uniformed officers from the metropolitan precinct walked through the front glass doors, their presence freezing the room in place.
"Officer Davies," Eleanor said without looking back. "She's all yours."
Chloe stepped backward, her stilettos wobbling against the slick floor. "Please, stop recording—wait, everyone, log off!" she stammered, fumbling to kill her livestream. But it was far too late.

Over one hundred and twenty thousand people had watched her commit a calculated crime.
