Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Ward

Red emergency beacons flickered to life along the ceiling, casting eerie, pulsing shadows against the hospital walls. The monitors began beeping intermittently, running on limited backup batteries.

“Stay down!” Mark shouted, drawing Elena closer as footsteps scrambled frantically outside in the corridor. Panic broke out down the ward as nurses called for backup generators.

Beatrice remained motionless, her hand gripping the silver handle of her cane, unsheathing a hidden blade concealed within the cane's shaft. “They’re not here to talk,” she muttered coldly.

Suddenly, the frosted glass window of the room shattered inward. A masked intruder clad in dark orderly scrubs lunged into the room, holding a pressurized pneumatic injector aimed straight toward Elena’s exposed intravenous line.

Mark lunged across the bed, tackling the intruder onto the tiled floor. The struggle was brutal, fists crashing against the bedside monitor. Elena screamed, clawing at the wall, while Beatrice brought the blunt pommel of her cane down hard against the assailant's temple.

The attacker collapsed limp. Mark ripped away the fabric mask, revealing the bruised, bleeding face of Erica’s private chauffeur. As the man gasped for air, he sneered through bloody teeth: “You’re too late, Mark. She’s already on the runway.”
