Chapter 2 - The Crimson Diagnostic

Fluorescent lights flickered along the sterile corridor of St. Jude’s Memorial. Elena drifted between searing pain and icy numbness, her hand pinned tightly beneath Mark’s quivering palms. “You’re safe, Elena. I won’t leave your side,” he repeated, but his knuckles were bone-white.

Behind the swinging double doors, the chief obstetrician, Dr. Aris, cut away the bloodstained hem of Elena’s sweater. The room went unnervingly still. He placed the ultrasound probe against her taut belly, his brow furrowing deeper with every rhythmic pulse on the monitor.

Outside the trauma suite, the Sterling family gathered like vultures circling prey. Beatrice stood erect, flanked by Erica, whose fingers tapped nervously against her designer clutch. “She was always fragile, Aunt Beatrice,” Erica purred softly. “Or perhaps she orchestrated this premature crisis so nobody could question the timeline of her conception.”

“Silence, Erica,” Beatrice commanded coldly, though her gaze remained suspicious. “The inheritance hinges entirely upon a legitimate direct heir. If she fails, the trusts default to you.”

Inside, the monitor emitted a sudden, piercing flatline tone. Elena arched her back, a raw scream tearing from her throat before falling completely silent. Dr. Aris dropped his equipment, shouting urgently for an emergency crash cart, when his eyes caught a foreign, synthetic outline on the screen that shouldn’t have existed.
