Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

The opulent chandelier trembled overhead as Elena collapsed against the hardwood floor. Sharp, lacerating spasms tore through her abdomen, stealing the breath from her throat. Mark’s grip was firm, anchoring her slipping consciousness, but his voice was jagged with fear. “Elena, stay with me! Call an ambulance now!”
Standing beside the marble console, Erica stepped back, folding her arms. The malicious smirk never entirely vanished from her eyes. “Don’t be so dramatic, Mark. I barely pointed a finger. If her stomach can’t handle a little skepticism, maybe she’s hiding something under that oversized wool sweater.”
Across the grand salon, the elder matriarch, Grand-Aunt Beatrice, moved forward, tapping her silver-tipped cane with steady, ominous precision. Her weathered eyes locked onto Elena’s trembling frame. “Enough bickering. If the bloodline of the Sterling family is at stake, no theatrics will be tolerated.”

Elena gripped Mark’s forearm, fingernails digging deep into his skin. Her teeth chattered violently, cold sweat drenching her temples. “Mark... it’s not time yet. It hurts too much... something’s wrong.”
Sirens wailed in the distant drive, cutting through the stifling tension of the manor. As paramedics burst through the heavy mahogany doors, Erica tilted her head and whispered loud enough for the entire hall to hear: “Let’s hope the blood test matches your pretty lies, darling.” Just as the gurney lifted Elena into the blinding glare of the afternoon, the lead paramedic looked up with wide, alarmed eyes, freezing everyone in the foyer.
