Chapter 7: Stand in the Storm

The shattered door fell inward with a heavy thud as three muscular private security enforcers surged into the narrow hallway, followed closely by Richard Sterling. Richard shook off his damp umbrella, a sinister, self-satisfied grin spreading across his aristocratic features.

"Well, well. Look at the noble heir playing dress-up in dirty overalls," Richard mocked, his voice dripping with condescending amusement. "Did you truly believe you could dismantle the Sterling empire with a few stolen concrete core samples, Leo? You’re an engineer, not a king. Out here in the real world, capital and power dictate reality."

Leo stood dead center in the hallway, holding the heavy steel pipe balanced in his right hand, his stance grounded and immovable. "You pocketed fifty-two million dollars meant for seismic dampeners and high-density concrete, Richard. You compromised the foundational bedrock of a tower that will house thousands of working families. That isn't business—that is premeditated manslaughter."

"It's maximizing return on investment for my stakeholders!" Richard snarled, his patience evaporating. "Break his legs and retrieve that drive before the old man reaches the street!"

The foremost enforcer lunged forward, throwing a vicious right hook aimed directly at Leo’s jaw. But Leo, having honed his reflexes through years of brutal physical labor on active job sites, stepped cleanly inside the attacker's guard. With fluid precision, he drove the blunt base of the steel pipe directly into the man’s diaphragm. The enforcer collapsed instantly onto the floor, wheezing for oxygen.

The second guard swung a heavy steel tactical baton. Leo raised his left forearm to deflect the blow, absorbing the impact with hardened muscle, then twisted the man’s wrist until the baton clattered noisily onto the floorboards, sweeping his legs out from under him with a textbook takedown.

Richard’s smug composure instantly shattered into frantic rage. "Shoot him! What am I paying you for? Shoot him down!"

The third guard reached beneath his jacket, drawing a black semi-automatic pistol. But before the barrel could align with Leo’s chest, the deafening wail of federal sirens erupted from every direction. Blinding emergency strobes bathed the entire room in vibrant flashes of crimson and cobalt.
