Chapter 4: Shadows Behind the Steel

Within forty-five minutes, a private black sedan with tinted windows whisked Leo and Clara away from the mounting media storm outside the Grand Galleria. Inside the quiet leather interior of the vehicle, the tension of the real world began to settle heavily between them.

"Where are you taking me, Leo?" Clara asked, her fingers tracing the sharp, precise folds of the origami lily resting on her lap.

Leo peeled off his fluorescent yellow vest, revealing his broad, athletic frame clad in a dark navy work shirt embroidered with the subtle, discreet Vance corporate emblem. "To the root of the rot, Clara. My father, Arthur Vance, fell critically ill six months ago. While he was undergoing intensive cardiovascular treatment in Zurich, our executive board appointed Richard Sterling—Victoria’s fiancé—as interim Chief Operating Officer."

Clara gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth. "Richard? But Richard controls all the subcontracting for Sterling Enterprises! My stepfather, Marcus Morales, is the chief geological surveyor for that firm. Just last Sunday, he came home trembling, muttering about dangerous soil anomalies being intentionally erased from the safety archives."

Leo’s expression hardened like cold granite. "Marcus Morales is your stepfather?"

"Yes," Clara whispered, her eyes clouding with painful memories. "When my biological mother passed away from illness seven years ago, Marcus raised me with every drop of honest sweat he had. But Richard and Victoria hold immense leverage over him. They fabricated an embezzlement allegation against me two years ago, using that fake legal threat to keep my father silent. They warned him that if he ever refused to sign off on their construction clearances, they would put me in federal prison."

Leo slammed his fist against the armrest, his jaw clenched in righteous fury. The pieces of the sinister puzzle were finally locking into place. Richard Sterling wasn't merely cutting operational costs to boost his year-end profit margins; he was actively skimming tens of millions of dollars from the structural steel budget of the Horizon Tower.

"The Horizon Tower is designed to house three thousand working-class and middle-income families, Clara," Leo said, his voice laced with urgent gravity. "Richard swapped Grade-8 earthquake-resistant structural steel with cheap, uncertified scrap alloy and falsified the bedrock foundation depth. If that tower reaches full height on compromised bedrock, a structural collapse is practically guaranteed."

Clara leaned forward, determination replacing her anxiety. "Marcus kept a secret backup drive. He told me that if anything ever happened to him, the raw, unaltered geological telemetry was hidden in our old apartment in Queens. Let’s go get it before Richard realizes what you’ve discovered."
