Chapter 3: The Girl in the White Dress

Ignoring the collective gasps and whispered frenzy spreading through the room, Leo turned his back entirely on Victoria and stepped toward Clara. The juxtaposition between them was breathtaking: she in her simple, unadorned white summer dress purchased on a budget, and he in his dust-caked blue uniform. Yet the genuine warmth radiating between them made all the polished luxury of the surrounding boutique feel shallow and hollow.

"Clara," Leo said softly, his voice dropping into a gentle, intimate register. He opened his palm, presenting the intricate origami lily he had folded from the blueprint. "I promised I’d bring this before your afternoon shift ended."

Clara took the delicate paper flower, her hands shaking slightly. Her gaze darted between the gleaming black card in his pocket and the smudges of mortar on his jawline. "Leo... or Mr. Vance... I don't understand any of this. Why were you working on the scaffolding? Why did you pretend to be an ordinary construction worker?"

"I never pretended, Clara," Leo answered, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with unmistakable sincerity. "I am an engineer by trade. My grandfather built this company from the dirt up with a sledgehammer and calloused hands, not from a penthouse suite. When anomalous data appeared on the safety blueprints for the new Midtown high-rise project, I put on the gear and went down into the dust to investigate the truth myself."

He took a slow step closer, his eyes softening. "And while I was down in that dirt, Clara, I found the only person in this entire superficial city who looked at a grease-stained stranger and saw a human being worthy of respect and warmth."

A tear slipped silently down Clara’s cheek. For the past month, while the rest of the boutique staff mocked the quiet laborer who sat eating alone on the concrete curb outside, Clara had consistently walked out during her ten-minute breaks. She had shared her homemade turkey sandwiches, offered him cold bottles of water in the sweltering heat, and listened to his thoughts on architecture without ever asking for his bank account or his pedigree.

"You don’t belong in a place that measures human value by fabric and price tags, Clara," Leo continued. "Victoria and her family have stolen your sketches for years, treating you like invisible labor. That cruelty ends right now."

Victoria tried to intervene, shrieking in desperation, "She is under contract! Clara belongs to Sterling Atelier!"

Leo turned his head slightly, his gaze piercing through her. "Julian, terminate Maison Royale's commercial lease with Sterling Atelier immediately. By sunset, I want their logo stripped from every building owned by Vance Global across North America."
