Chapter 7: The Hidden Ledger

Elena knelt beside the overturned desk, ignoring the scattered papers and broken picture frames. Her sharp eyes caught a glint of metallic light beneath the baseboard where the desk had been forced away from the wall. She reached out, sliding her slender fingers into the narrow gap, and pulled out a small, heavy object wrapped in a thick piece of oilcloth.
"Michael, look at this," she said softly, holding up the package.
Michael turned around, stepping over a pile of ruined clothing. He knelt beside her, his brow furrowed in confusion as Elena unwrapped the cloth. Inside lay a leather-bound journal with thick, cream-colored pages and a brass clasp. It was an old ledger, the kind used for corporate accounting back in the seventies and eighties, long before digital databases replaced physical records.
"What is that?" Michael asked, touching the worn leather cover.
"I think this is what they were looking for," Elena replied, unlocking the brass clasp with a gentle click. She flipped open the cover. The pages were filled with meticulous, handwritten entries detailing financial transactions, corporate shell companies, and the transfer of immense sums of money between the family’s primary enterprise and a series of anonymous offshore accounts.
Michael scanned the names and dates, his face turning pale. "This... this is impossible. These are the records from the period before my father died. Mother always claimed the old ledgers were destroyed in the warehouse fire."
"They weren't destroyed," Elena said, tracing a finger down a column of numbers that showed millions of dollars being systematically embezzled from public shareholders and funneled into private trusts controlled entirely by Eleanor. "Clara kept them. She knew what your mother was doing, and she saved the proof as an insurance policy."
"And that is why Eleanor had to erase her," Michael said, the final pieces of the horrific puzzle snapping into place in his mind. "It wasn't just about corporate disagreement. Clara had the smoking gun that could put Mother in federal prison for securities fraud and embezzlement."
"Which means Clara is still alive," Elena declared with absolute certainty. "If they had found this ledger, they would have burned it. The fact that it was hidden so well means Clara hid it before they took her, and they are torturing her right now to find out where it is."
Michael looked up from the ledger, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fierce determination. "We have to find her, Elena. And we have to do it before Mother destroys whatever is left of our family."
"We need a safe place to analyze these records," Elena said, slipping the ledger into her designer handbag and covering it with her scarf. "And we need someone outside of Eleanor’s reach who knows how to read corporate forensic accounting."

"I know just the person," Michael said, standing up and pulling Elena to her feet. "An old college friend of mine who works for the federal regulatory commission. But we have to move fast. If Eleanor’s people realize the ledger is missing, they will trace us back to this apartment within the hour."
