Chapter 10: The Calm Before the Storm

The afternoon sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a golden light over the manicured lawns of the family estate. Inside the grand manor, preparations for the annual foundation gala were already underway. Caterers bustled through the kitchens, florists arranged towering centerpieces of white orchids, and security teams tested the perimeter gates.

Elena walked into the master dressing room, where a sleek, floor-length black evening gown hung waiting for her. The dark green dress from the night of the confrontation was folded neatly in the back of the closet—a symbol of the woman she used to be, before the veil of ignorance was ripped away.

The door opened quietly, and Eleanor stepped into the room. The matriarch was dressed in an ivory silk gown draped with heavy diamonds, her posture rigid and unyielding. She looked at Elena with a gaze that could freeze boiling water.

"I hear you and Michael took a little trip into the city yesterday," Eleanor said smoothly, walking slowly toward the center of the room. "Visiting the slums. How charmingly bohemian of you, Elena. I suppose Michael told you all sorts of romantic stories about his rebellious sister."

Elena did not turn around immediately. She picked up a diamond-encrusted hair clip from the vanity, turning it over in her hand before facing her mother-in-law. "He told me enough to realize that this family was built on stolen money and shattered lives, Eleanor. And I am tired of pretending I don't see the rot underneath the foundation."

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. She stepped closer, invading Elena’s personal space with an air of calculated dominance. "You are playing a game you do not understand, child. You think because you married my son, you hold some kind of power here? I built this dynasty with my bare hands. I survived recessions, corporate raids, and family betrayals. A spoiled girl in a designer dress will not bring me down."

"We will see about that tomorrow night," Elena replied, her voice completely devoid of fear.

Eleanor let out a cold, humorless chuckle. "Tomorrow night, hundred of powerful people will gather in this very house to celebrate our legacy. By the time the night is over, you and Michael will be legally separated, financially ruined, and quietly escorted off these grounds. Enjoy your final hours of comfort, Elena. You earned them."

With that, Eleanor turned on her heel and swept out of the room, closing the heavy oak door behind her with a definitive click.

Elena exhaled slowly, her hands steady. She walked over to the desk where her laptop sat connected to a secure satellite hotspot. On the screen, David Vance’s confirmation message blinked green: Evidence authenticated. Press contacts briefed. Ready when you are.

She looked at the digital clock in the corner of the screen. Twenty-four hours until the gala began. Twenty-four hours until the truth came to light.
