Chapter 11: The Gala Unfolds

The grand ballroom of the estate shimmered under the light of a thousand crystal pendants. String quartet music drifted softly through the air, mingling with the polite chatter of wealthy donors, politicians, and corporate executives dressed in high-end formal wear. In the center of the room, Eleanor held court near the main staircase, accepting praise and shaking hands with the practiced grace of a seasoned queen.
Michael and Elena descended the grand staircase together. Michael wore a pristine tuxedo, his posture calm and resolute, while Elena commanded every eye in the room in her striking black evening gown. For the assembled guests, they looked like the picture-perfect corporate power couple. Only those closest to them could sense the electric tension radiating from their presence.
Eleanor watched them descend, her smile tightening just a fraction before she smoothed her expression back into welcoming warmth. "Michael, Elena. So glad you could finally join us. The evening is already a tremendous success."
"I am sure it is, Mother," Michael replied smoothly, accepting a glass of champagne from a passing waiter without drinking it. "Though I think our guests are going to find the second half of the program much more interesting than the first."
Eleanor’s gaze flickered with sudden suspicion, but before she could respond, the lights in the ballroom dimmed slightly, and the master of ceremonies tapped gently on the microphone at the front stage to announce the beginning of the keynote address.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the MC announced into the sound system. "If I could have your attention for a brief presentation regarding the future of our foundation..."
Elena slipped away from the group, moving quietly toward the side doors that led to the private executive study. This was the moment they had planned with David. While the gala distracted the guests and security, she needed to access the private server room to upload the ledger directly to the federal portal and broadcast feeds.
As she pushed open the heavy oak door of the study, a shadow detached itself from the bookshelf in the corner.
Elena froze. Standing by the desk was a tall, unfamiliar man in a dark security uniform, holding a small flash drive in his hand. He turned around slowly, his expression cold and calculating.
"Looking for this?" the man asked, holding up the drive.
May you like
Before Elena could react, the door behind her clicked shut. She spun around to find two more security guards blocking the exit. They had anticipated her move.
