Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The crystal chandelier above the mahogany dining table cast fractured prisms of light across the room, mimicking the jagged edges of a family finally tearing itself apart. Elena stood near the foot of the table, her dark green silk dress catching the amber glow. Her long dark hair framed a face pale with exhaustion, yet her eyes burned with a hard, unyielding fire. She looked up at Michael, her chest rising and falling with shallow, controlled breaths. The silence in the room was heavy, suffocating, saturated with years of unspoken resentments and carefully curated lies.

"Now apologize for forgetting who runs this family," Elena said, her voice dropping to a low, trembling register that demanded absolute attention.

Across from her, Michael stood rigid in his tailored navy blue suit. He did not flinch, though his jaw muscles twitched. He knew better than to interrupt Elena when she reached this specific threshold of rage. Behind him, Eleanor, his mother, sat regally in a cream-colored knit dress adorned with a double strand of pearls. Eleanor’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unfiltered malice as she leaned forward, her knuckles white against the edge of the table.

"Tell her, Michael, ask your husband where he really goes every Thursday night," Eleanor shouted, her voice cutting through the heavy air like a rusted blade.

Michael remained silent, his gaze fixed on the mahogany floorboards. The tension in the room thickened, stretching like a wire pulled past its breaking point. Elena stepped closer to him, her expression a mix of betrayal and bitter vindication.

"You let her do this," Elena whispered, her voice cracking slightly as the reality of his compliance settled over her like lead.

Before Michael could formulate a defense, a low, electronic buzzing disrupted the tense quiet. In the center of the polished dining table, a sleek smartphone vibrated against the dark wood. The screen illuminated the surrounding area with a harsh blue glow, displaying an incoming call from a contact saved simply as "Sister."

Michael’s eyes darted toward the phone, panic flashing across his features for a fraction of a second. The name on the screen belonged to a ghost, a sibling the family had supposedly buried emotionally, if not literally, years ago. The sudden visibility of this connection threatened to unravel every secret Michael had spent a decade burying beneath layers of wealth and social status.

Without thinking, Michael lunged forward, his voice cracking through the quiet room with sudden, desperate fury. "Shut up!" he barked at no one in particular, his hand hovering over the ringing device as the entire dining room held its collective breath, waiting to see who would dare answer.
