Chapter 6: Across the City

The drive across the city felt like a descent into a different world. The sprawling estates, manicured lawns, and private security gates gave way to narrow, congested streets lined with weathered brick apartment buildings and fading storefronts. Elena sat in the passenger seat of the sedan, watching the urban landscape shift through the tinted glass. The opulence of their normal life felt distant, almost surreal, as if it belonged to another lifetime entirely.

Michael parked the car in a tight spot beside a rusted chain-link fence. The neighborhood was quiet, save for the distant wail of a siren and the low hum of morning traffic. He turned off the engine, but made no immediate move to get out. He sat with his hands resting lightly on the steering wheel, his knuckles pale.

"This is it," Michael said quietly. "Number 404. Fourth floor. There is no elevator."

Elena unbuckled her seatbelt and opened her door, stepping out onto the cracked pavement. She adjusted her blazer, breathing in the scent of exhaust and damp concrete. "Lead the way, Michael. We did not come all this way to sit in the car."

They climbed the narrow concrete stairwell of the apartment building, the walls peeling with layers of faded paint and scrawled graffiti. The air smelled of old cooking oil and dampness. When they reached the fourth floor, Michael walked down the dim hallway and stopped in front of a heavy wooden door marked with a tarnished brass number four.

The door was slightly ajar. A thin strip of pale light spilled out onto the worn linoleum floor.

Michael froze, his hand hovering inches from the wood. A cold dread washed over his features. "I locked this door when I left last Thursday," he whispered, his voice trembling.

Elena did not hesitate. She pushed the door open the rest of the way, stepping past him into the cramped apartment. The living room was in disarray. Books were scattered across the floor, cushions had been slashed open, and a small wooden desk had been forcefully pulled away from the wall, its drawers emptied and ransacked.

"Clara!" Michael shouted, rushing past Elena into the small bedroom at the back of the unit.

Elena followed closely behind, her heart hammering against her ribs. The bedroom was equally destroyed, clothes strewn everywhere, the mattress overturned. But the room was empty. There was no sign of Clara, no indication of where she might have gone, and no note to explain the sudden violence.

"Someone has been here," Elena said, stating the obvious as she inspected the splintered frame of the front door. "And it was not a random burglary. They were looking for something specific."

Michael stood in the center of the devastated room, staring at his empty hands. The realization hit him with physical force. "Mother found her. She sent someone before we even had a chance to get here."
