Chapter 9: The House of Cards

The federal courthouse was quiet, save for the frantic clicking of keyboards and the hushed, urgent whispers of attorneys rushing down the marble corridors. Marcus led Chloe and Julian through a secure side entrance, avoiding the media circus beginning to gather on the front steps. Word of Evelyn Carter’s sudden arrest had already leaked to financial news networks, sending shockwaves through Wall Street and causing stock prices for Carter & Associates to plummet in after-hours trading. They sat in a private conference room on the fourth floor, waiting for Judge Henderson to review the raw data extracted from the basement vault.

Julian paced near the tall window, watching the streetlamps flicker on as dusk settled over the city. "If the judge grants the emergency seizure order, the board members will be picked up simultaneously before they can board private flights out of the country."

Chloe sat quietly at the mahogany table, sipping a paper cup of water Marcus had brought her. Her physical bruises ached in the quiet room, but her mind was entirely clear. She traced the edge of the American flag lapel pin on her jacket, thinking of all the colleagues who had suffered in silence under Evelyn’s tyrannical rule. "They'll try to paint us as disgruntled employees acting out of malice. Evelyn’s legal team has spent decades spinning narratives to protect the firm's reputation at any human cost."

"They won't have time to spin anything this time," Marcus said, walking into the conference room with a sheaf of printed federal warrants in his hand. A rare, triumphant smile broke across his face. "Judge Henderson just signed off on every single indictment. Federal marshals are executing the board arrests right now."

The door opened wider, and two federal agents stepped inside to escort Julian and Chloe down to the secure debriefing room to sign their official witness affidavits. As Chloe stood up, smoothing the wrinkles of her navy blue suit one last time, she felt a profound sense of closure washing over her. The fear that had paralyzed her for years was entirely gone, replaced by the quiet, fierce strength of a woman who had reclaimed her own destiny.
