Chapter 2: Threshold of Accountability

The crisp uniform of the lead police officer seemed to shrink the cavernous office instantly, reducing Evelyn Carter’s immense domain to the dimensions of a holding cell. For a fraction of a second, the older woman’s legendary composure fractured; a microscopic twitch near her left eye betrayed her absolute shock. Yet, true to her ironclad nature, Evelyn recovered almost immediately. She straightened her blue button-down shirt, smoothing the fabric with slow, deliberate fingers, and adjusted her grip on the wooden cane until her knuckles turned white. She did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice in panic. Instead, she fixed the lead officer with a glacial stare that had broken the spirits of countless corporate adversaries over the past four decades. Julian shifted his weight from foot to foot in the background, his dark grey t-shirt sticking to his chest with nervous sweat. He had anticipated a reckoning, but seeing uniformed law enforcement cross this sacred threshold felt entirely surreal.
Chloe stood a few paces away, her smartphone still pressed firmly to her ear, though the call had already connected to a confidential legal hotline. She watched the officers with cautious relief, refusing to let her guard down just yet. She knew Evelyn’s legal net was vast, woven with decades of compromised loyalties, hidden shell companies, and silenced whistleblowers. The lead officer, a seasoned veteran named Sergeant Miller, stepped further into the room, his hand resting casually near his heavy leather duty belt. He looked past Evelyn toward Julian and Chloe, ensuring everyone present was accounted for before executing the warrant.
"Ma'am, there are formal allegations of corporate fraud, asset misappropriation, and witness intimidation tied directly to this address," Sergeant Miller said, his tone flat, professional, and entirely devoid of intimidation. "I advise you not to make any statements without legal counsel present."

Evelyn let out a dry, dismissive scoff that rattled in her chest. "You are trespassing in a private establishment based on malicious hearsay, Sergeant. I built this foundation before you wore a badge, and I will dismantle your career before the sun sets."
Her threat carried the heavy weight of lived experience, but Miller remained unimpressed. He gestured slightly to the two officers flanking him. They stepped forward, their movements synchronized and professional, closing the physical distance between themselves and the aging tyrant. Julian caught Chloe’s eye across the room; a silent communication passed between them. They had opened Pandora's box, and there was no closing it.
