Chapter 4: The Descent to the Vault

The basement archives of Carter & Associates smelled of old paper, ozone, and cold concrete, a stark contrast to the sterile, sunlit luxury of the penthouse offices above. Julian swiped his administrative keycard against the reinforced steel reader, the green light blinking twice before the heavy pneumatic seal hissed open. He stepped inside first, holding a high-lumen tactical flashlight that cut through the absolute darkness of the subterranean room. Chloe followed closely behind him, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor, her navy blue suit jacket buttoned tightly against the drafty chill. The server racks hummed with a low, rhythmic vibration, housing the confidential records that Evelyn had spent decades hiding from federal regulators, tax agencies, and betrayed partners alike.
"The main terminal is over here," Julian said, his voice echoing softly off the concrete walls as he led the way toward a glowing terminal at the back of the room. He sat down in the rolling chair, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed, entering override codes he had memorized out of sheer survival instinct.
Chloe stood behind his shoulder, her eyes scanning the flickering green lines of code reflecting off his glasses. "How long before the system detects our remote extraction?"
"Normally, it wouldn't. But with Evelyn detained, her automated security protocols are running on high alert," Julian muttered, beads of sweat forming along his hairline as a red warning banner flashed across the screen. "Someone from the board level is trying to initiate a remote wipe from an external IP address. They must know we're down here."
"Can you isolate the mainframe?" Chloe asked sharply, leaning in closer, her hand resting briefly on the back of Julian's chair.
"I'm trying, but they've got root access," Julian replied, his jaw tight as he fought the invisible hacker for control of the database. "If they succeed, every single financial transaction, shell company registry, and victim payout ledger vanishes into digital ether. We’ll be left with nothing except your word against a multi-billion-dollar legal defense team."

Chloe’s mind raced. She thought of the wooden cane striking the floor, the cold cruelty in Evelyn’s voice, and the countless individuals whose lives had been ruined by the firm’s predatory practices. She refused to let them win from behind bars. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her smartphone, and tapped open the encrypted diagnostic app Julian had installed earlier that morning.
"Disconnect the local network from the outside world entirely," Chloe instructed, her tone leaving no room for debate. "Use the physical hardline backup cable. We download everything straight to the encrypted drive in my hand, right now."
