Chapter 6: Escape Through the Service Grid

The second round of heavy pounding against the archive door rattled the reinforced steel frame, sending tiny flakes of gray paint showering onto the concrete floor. Chloe’s mind raced, calculating every possible exit route from the subterranean vault. She remembered the architectural schematics Julian had shown her during their late-night planning sessions weeks ago, long before they had dared to dream of bringing Evelyn down.

"The service corridor," Chloe whispered urgently, grabbing Julian by the sleeve of his dark grey t-shirt to snap him out of his paralyzed state. "The maintenance hatch behind the secondary cooling rack. Does it still lead to the old municipal steam tunnels?"

Julian blinked, memory flooding back as he pointed toward the far, shadowed corner of the room. "Yes! But it hasn't been used in a decade. It’s tight, dirty, and leads straight out to the alley behind the municipal courthouse."

"It beats spending the next twenty years in a federal holding cell cooked up by the board," Chloe replied decisively, pulling the heavy flash drive tighter against her chest.

Another deafening crash echoed as the private security contractors threw their weight against the archive door, splintering the electronic lock housing. Sparks rained down from the damaged keypad as the automated security system finally gave way. Julian bolted toward the cooling rack, throwing his shoulder against the heavy metal panel hidden behind the humming machinery. With a sharp screech of rusted hinges, the maintenance hatch popped open, revealing a dark, cavernous shaft smelling of damp earth and old iron.

"Go! I'll cover the trace logs!" Julian urged, gesturing for Chloe to enter first.

Chloe didn't hesitate. She ducked her head, ignoring the high heels and the structured wool of her navy blue suit, and crawled into the narrow darkness of the tunnel. Julian followed a second later, pulling the heavy metal hatch shut behind them just as the archive door burst inward with a thunderous crash. Shouts of angry men echoed in the abandoned server room as boots scuffed across the concrete floor, but the thick steel barrier of the maintenance shaft muffled their voices into harmless static.

Crawling through the cramped, damp tunnel required every ounce of physical endurance Chloe possessed. Her knees scraped against the rough brick floor, and dust filled the air, catching in her throat, but she kept moving forward, guided only by the faint sliver of distant daylight at the far end of the service shaft. Julian scrambled closely behind her, his breathing heavy in the confined space. They were dirty, bruised, and completely cut off from their normal lives, but they carried the ultimate key to justice in their pocket.
