Chapter 7: The Courthouse Alley

Bursting out from the rusted municipal service grate into the cool, damp air of the courthouse alley, Chloe and Julian collapsed against the weathered brick wall. The contrast between the subterranean darkness and the gray afternoon daylight was blinding. Chloe brushed soot and dust from the shoulders of her navy blue suit, wincing as she felt a fresh tear in the fabric near her elbow. She reached instinctively into her inner pocket, confirming the USB flash drive was still safe and secure against her chest. Julian stood up slowly, shaking grit from his dark grey t-shirt and wiping his glasses with the hem. He looked down the narrow alleyway toward the bustling street beyond, where pedestrians walked by entirely oblivious to the seismic corporate earthquake happening just blocks away.
"We need to get to the federal prosecutor's office before the board’s lawyers file that injunction," Julian said, his voice urgent as he scanned the perimeter for any sign of private surveillance cameras or lingering security contractors.
Chloe checked her smartphone, wincing slightly as she saw the cracked screen from her earlier fall. The battery was at twenty percent, but the cellular signal was strong. "My secure contact at the Department of Justice is waiting. If we hand this physical drive directly to them outside of the local jurisdiction, the board cannot intercept the chain of custody."
They moved quickly and quietly, blending into the pedestrian traffic on the avenue. Every siren in the distance made Julian flinch, his nervous system still wired from the tense confrontation in the archives. Chloe, however, walked with a calm, deliberate stride. The physical pain of the cane strike had dulled into a steady reminder of what was at stake. She had faced down Evelyn Carter in her own domain and refused to bow; a few blocks of nervous walking were nothing compared to the war they had already initiated.

As they rounded the corner toward the imposing granite steps of the federal building, a sleek black sedan pulled up sharply to the curb. The tinted rear window rolled down smoothly, revealing Marcus Vance, a senior federal prosecutor and, crucially, Chloe’s estranged older brother. Marcus looked at them through the open window, taking in their disheveled appearances, the dust on Chloe’s suit, and the tense posture of the young man standing beside her.
"Get in the car, both of you," Marcus ordered, his tone a mix of strict professional caution and undeniable familial concern. "Before anyone realizes you slipped through the net."
