Chapter 8

The neon sign above the diner hummed loudly, filling the tense silence with a persistent, rhythmic buzz. Arthur stood just a few feet away, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his gray trousers, though his posture remained tense and ready. He looked at Elena with a mixture of predatory amusement and underlying frustration, clearly annoyed that she still refused to cower.

"You always did overestimate your hand, Elena," Arthur said smoothly, taking a slow step closer. "You think you're some kind of revolutionary protecting her cub. In reality, you're just a trespasser trying to cash out on a world you don't understand."

"I understand your world perfectly, Arthur," Elena replied, her voice steady and chillingly calm. She kept her body positioned between the table and the aisle, blocking any immediate lunge toward her. "It’s built on stolen money, fabricated silence, and cowards hiding behind badges and emeralds."

Agent Vance shifted uncomfortably in the booth, tapping his fingers against the laminate table. He pulled out the flash drive he had taken from Elena, turning it over in his palm. "Look, Arthur, we have the drive. Let’s just wrap this up and get out of here before the highway patrol makes a routine stop."

"Patience, Vance," Arthur snapped, his eyes never leaving Elena. "I want her to understand the finality of this moment. She thinks she can walk away with our secrets. She needs to know that wherever she goes, whatever name she uses, our reach is absolute."

Elena’s mind raced. Outside the front window, David’s sedan was still idling in the parking lot. Through the tinted glass, she could faintly see David’s silhouette leaning over the steering wheel, desperately scanning the diner interior. She knew David had a backup sat-phone in the glove compartment—one that wasn't routed through Vance’s compromised frequency. If she could stall them just long enough, David could transmit the encrypted data packet directly to an independent federal prosecutor in Washington.

"You talk about reach, Arthur, but all I see is a frightened little boy hiding behind Margaret’s apron strings," Elena taunted, her voice dripping with calculated disdain. "How does it feel to know that despite all your wealth, your power, and your hired thugs, your entire empire is resting on a piece of plastic in Vance’s hand—a piece of plastic that has already been automatically mirrored to a dead-man’s switch?"

Arthur’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second. His eyes flicked down to the flash drive in Vance’s hand. "What did you say?"

"You heard me," Elena smiled coldly. "If I don't check in with my secure server every two hours, that data goes public to every news outlet in the country. Vance didn't secure your empire today, Arthur. He just tied a noose around your neck."
