Chapter 3

The cavernous foyer of the estate echoed with the heavy ticking of an antique grandfather clock as Elena hurried toward the massive oak front doors. Her bare shoulders felt exposed in the deep red velvet gown, the fabric brushing against her skin with every hurried step. In her left hand, she clutched Lily’s small, warm hand. The little girl wore her white sneakers, which squeaked faintly against the polished hardwood floor, a jarring sound in the oppressive silence of the massive foyer.
They had left their coats in the parlor, but Elena refused to go back for them. Every instinct screamed at her to put as much distance as possible between this cursed estate and the people inside it. The crisp night air hit them the moment the heavy door swung open, carrying the sharp scent of approaching autumn rain.
As they stepped down the stone portico, the headlights of a idling black sedan cut through the darkness. The driver’s door pushed open, and David, a trusted family friend and former investigator who had been helping Elena look into the family’s dark financial history, stepped out onto the driveway. His face was etched with immediate concern as he spotted them rushing out into the cold.
"Elena! What happened? I heard shouting inside," David said, jogging over and instantly shucking off his heavy wool trench coat to drape it over Elena’s bare shoulders.
"No time to explain, David," Elena breathed, her voice trembling slightly now that the adrenaline was beginning to ebb. She scooped Lily up into her arms, letting the oversized coat swallow her frame. "We need to get to the safe house immediately. Arthur crossed a line tonight. He attacked me in front of everyone."
David’s jaw tightened. A dark fury flickered in his eyes. "I knew that man was unstable, but laying hands on you? That changes everything. Get in the car, quickly."
They piled into the back seat of the sedan. The leather interior was warm, contrasting sharply with the damp chill outside. David slid behind the steering wheel, his hands gripping the wheel tightly as he shifted into gear. The tires crunched on the gravel driveway as he steered the vehicle away from the grand estate, its illuminated windows glowing like the eyes of a sleeping beast in the rearview mirror.
In the back seat, Lily finally let out a soft sigh, resting her head against Elena’s chest. The little girl’s brown hair was slightly mussed from the events of the evening, a few strands escaping her half-up bun. Elena stroked her daughter’s hair gently, staring out the window at the dense pine trees blurring past in the darkness.
"Are we safe now, Mommy?" Lily murmured softly, her voice heavy with exhaustion.
"We are, baby. Nobody is ever going to hurt you," Elena promised, though her own heart was racing. She knew that Arthur and Margaret would not let them disappear so easily. What they knew—the secret documents Elena had managed to copy before the gala—threatened to tear the family’s entire empire to the ground.

David glanced back through the rearview mirror, meeting Elena’s gaze with a grim expression. "They're going to come after us, Elena. You realize that, right? Once they realize what’s missing from the study, they’ll tear the city apart to find you."
Elena pulled David’s wool coat tighter around herself and Lily, her jaw set with unwavering resolve. "Let them look. We have what we need to end this once and for all."
