Chapter 13

The heavy oak doors slammed against the interior walls with a force that rattled the crystal decanters on the side table. Standing in the doorway was not a group of hired thugs, but a full tactical unit of Federal Marshals, led by District Attorney Marcus himself. Their sidearms were drawn, and their black tactical vests bore bold white lettering that commanded absolute authority.

"Federal Marshals! Nobody move!" Marcus shouted, stepping into the room with an expression of cold, unrelenting determination.

Arthur froze mid-motion, his hand hovering inches from Elena’s neck. Color instantly drained from his face as he slowly lowered his arm, his eyes darting toward the armed agents surrounding the perimeter of the room. Margaret sank back into her velvet armchair, her hands trembling violently against the heavy pearls at her neck as the reality of their situation finally set in.

"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy," Agent Marcus declared, stepping forward and flashing an official federal warrant. "And Margaret Vance, you are named as the primary beneficiary and orchestrator of these criminal operations. Anything you say can and will be used against you."

The guards flanking Elena dropped their hands instantly, stepping back and raising their palms in surrender as the marshals moved in to secure the room. Steel handcuffs clicked onto Arthur’s wrists with a harsh, final sound, mirroring the shattering glass from the night of the gala.

Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, the immense weight of the past forty-eight hours finally lifting from her shoulders. David stepped up beside her, using a pocketknife to quickly slice through the zip-ties binding her wrists.

"Are you alright?" David asked quietly, rubbing his own bruised jaw.

"I am now," Elena whispered, massaging her wrists where the plastic ties had dug into her skin. She looked across the room at Margaret, who sat paralyzed in her emerald green gown, stripped of all her power and false grandeur. The matriarch looked smaller now, a frail, aging woman consumed by her own greed.

Arthur was pressed against the mahogany table by two marshals, his expensive gray suit rumpled and stained with soot from the nearby fireplace. As they hauled him toward the exit, he shot one last venomous glare at Elena, his voice dripping with bitter hatred.

"You haven't won anything, Elena," Arthur spat as they dragged him past her. "The system won't let us fall alone. We’ll take everyone down with us."

"The system is finally doing its job, Arthur," Elena replied coldly, watching him leave without a shred of pity.

As the last of the marshals escorted the prisoners out of the grand parlor, Marcus lingered behind, walking over to Elena with a respectful nod. "Thank you, Ms. Vance. The data packet your associate transmitted was clean, complete, and comprehensive. The asset freeze orders were signed by a federal judge ten minutes ago. Your daughter is safe, and your testimony will ensure they never see freedom again."
