Chapter 5

The first gray light of dawn filtered grudgingly through the heavy blackout curtains of the cabin, casting long, melancholic shadows across the wooden floorboards. Elena had not slept. She sat at the kitchen table, her eyes fixed on the glowing screen of the laptop while David paced quietly near the front window, occasionally peering through a tiny gap in the fabric to scan the empty forest road outside.

In the corner of the living room, Lily was still curled up in the overstuffed armchair, wrapped tightly in the knitted blanket. Her steady, soft breathing was the only sound of peace in a world that felt increasingly hostile. The little girl had kicked off one of her white sneakers in her sleep, exposing a tiny white sock. Elena’s chest ached with a fierce, protective love as she looked at her daughter.

"Nothing yet," David muttered, rubbing the back of his neck with a tired hand. "No vehicles on the access road. But that doesn't mean they aren't looking. Arthur has contacts in local law enforcement. If he reported us missing—or worse, twisted the narrative to claim we fled with stolen property—we could have the police tracking our phones within hours."

"We turned off the cellular devices as soon as we crossed the county line," Elena reminded him, her voice low and calm. "We're using the encrypted sat-link only."

"Good," David nodded, stopping his pacing to lean against the edge of the table. "I’ve made contact with Agent Vance at the federal securities fraud division. He’s been quietly building a case against Margaret’s conglomerate for over a year, but he lacked the internal ledger keys. What you copied gives him everything he needs for immediate asset freezes and arrest warrants."

Elena looked down at the flash drive resting beside her coffee cup. It was a tiny piece of plastic and metal, yet it held the power to bring a dynasty crashing down. "When can Vance move?"

"He wants to meet in person," David said, hesitating slightly. "A secure drop-off at a neutral location. But it’s risky, Elena. If Arthur’s security detail intercepts our communications or tracks our digital footprint when I send the confirmation ping, they’ll know exactly where to strike."

"Where is the meeting?" Elena asked without hesitation.

"An old diner off Route 9, about twenty miles south of here," David replied, watching her closely. "Neutral ground, but isolated. I can go alone."

"No," Elena said firmly, standing up from the chair. The deep red velvet gown swished softly against her legs; she hadn't changed clothes, refusing to let go of the armor she had worn when she stood up to Arthur. "We do this together. If I stay here, I'm just a target waiting to be cornered. We leave for Route 9 in one hour."

David studied her face for a long moment, reading the ironclad determination in her eyes. He knew arguing with her was useless. "Alright. I'll wake Lily, pack the gear, and ready the car. Stay sharp, Elena. The real war is about to begin."
