Chapter 7

Agent Vance kept his hands flat on the scarred laminate table, his eyes darting toward the front windows where David’s sedan was parked outside. He took a slow sip of his coffee before leaning in closer, lowering his voice so the elderly waitress behind the counter couldn't overhear.
"You brought the drive?" Vance asked, his tone brisk and entirely businesslike.
Elena reached into the interior pocket of David’s coat and pulled out the small black flash drive, placing it gently on the table between them. "Every file, every offshore routing number, and the digital signatures linking Margaret and Arthur directly to the embezzlement scheme. It’s all there."
Vance reached out, his fingers hovering over the plastic casing of the drive. "And you have copies?"
"Securely stored offsite," Elena lied smoothly, knowing full well that this drive was their only leverage. "Once you verify the contents, I want federal protective custody initiated for my daughter and myself."
Vance nodded slowly, sliding the drive toward himself and slipping it into his trench coat pocket. A strange, unreadable expression flickered across his face—a fleeting shadow of hesitation that Elena’s sharp instincts caught instantly.
"Protection will be provided," Vance said, though his voice lacked conviction. He didn't reach for his briefcase to pull out paperwork, nor did he pull out a secure terminal to verify the data. Instead, his hand remained inside his coat pocket, resting heavily on something hard.
"Something's wrong," Elena said sharply, her muscles tensing beneath the coat. She began to slide back out of the booth.
Before she could stand, the heavy glass front door of the diner burst open with a loud crash. Two men in dark suits stepped inside, blocking the exit entirely. Behind them, stepping through the doorway with slow, deliberate arrogance, was Arthur. He wore the same gray suit from the gala, though his burgundy tie was slightly loosened, and his cold eyes radiated a venomous triumph.
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She looked back across the table. Agent Vance offered a tired, apologetic sigh, pulling his hand out of his pocket to reveal a Federal Bureau badge—and a burner phone that was currently blinking with an active call.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Vance—or whatever your real maiden name is," Vance said quietly, not meeting her eyes. "Federal jurisdiction is a complicated thing. Some debts run deeper than bureaucracy."
Arthur walked slowly down the aisle between the vinyl booths, his polished shoes clicking rhythmically against the checkered linoleum floor—a cruel echo of the ballroom floor where this nightmare had begun. He stopped a few feet from Elena’s table, a thin, cruel smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Did you really think a mid-level federal investigator was going to help you bring down a fifty-year family dynasty?" Arthur mocked softly, his voice smooth and menacing. "Vance here is on our payroll, Elena. He has been for years."

Elena didn't scream, and she didn't cry. Instead, a cold, calculated fury settled deep within her bones. She stood up slowly from the booth, towering over the table despite her lack of physical size. She looked from the corrupt agent to the man who thought he could own her life.
"You are making a catastrophic mistake, Arthur," Elena whispered, her voice carrying a terrifying stillness that made even the burly men blocking the door hesitate. "You think you've cornered me. But you just brought me right to where I needed to be."
