Chapter 8 - The Carrier

"Carrier of what?" Julian yelled, his voice echoing off the metal filing cabinets. "She’s a baby! She’s two hours old!"

"Her father wasn't just a chemist, Julian; he was an architect of synthetic genetics," Rao explained, his voice hushed and urgent as he stepped closer. "Before his laboratory was burned, he synthesized a neural repair sequence—an organic code capable of reversing degenerative brain death. But he couldn't synthesize it in a lab without the samples decaying. He had to store the biological key inside human DNA."

Julian’s breath hitched. "Inside Clara."

"Clara was the safe. But the code is dormant in the mother, activated only through placental transfer during labor. Maya isn't just your daughter, Julian. In every drop of her blood, she carries the only functional cure for the most aggressive neurodegenerative disorders known to man. A patent worth billions. A patent her sister’s syndicate has spent twenty years tracking."

A sudden realization struck Julian like a physical blow. "The woman said... if the baby survived, the child belonged to her."

"Yes," Rao said gravely. "Because when Clara’s vitals flatlined, the telemetry beacon triggered an automated asset-recovery protocol. Look up, Julian."
