Chapter 1 - The Red Line

The fluorescent glare of Trauma Delivery Unit 3 hummed with an indifferent, buzzing cruelty. Julian gripped Clara’s trembling fingers, his knuckles whitening beneath the pressure of her desperate hold. Her skin was burning, slick with sweat that plastered damp curls of blonde hair across her hollowed cheeks. Every breath she dragged into her lungs sounded like tearing paper, ragged and thin. Across the metal guardrail, Dr. Rao didn't look up from the vitals monitor, but Julian felt the air shift. A low, rhythmic warning chirp pulsed from the display, its numbers dropping in stark crimson LED light.
Julian leaned closer, resting his forehead against hers, inhaling the sharp, metallic scent of antiseptic and fear. He tried to speak the promises he had rehearsed during the frantic drive over cracked suburban asphalt, but the words withered on his tongue. Clara’s eyes fluttered open, unfocused, milky with sudden exhaustion. She wasn't fighting the contractions anymore; she was slipping under them, drowning in the silence between her own gasps.
"Doctor, she's burning up," Julian whispered, his voice cracking against the sterile silence. "Her pulse... why is it slowing down?"
Dr. Rao silenced him with a raised hand, gloved in blue nitrile, before pressing a cold palm against Clara’s collarbone. The doctor’s jaw clamped shut, his posture rigid as he met the gaze of Nurse Elena across the gurney. A single look passed between them—a practiced, terrifying language born of critical care rooms. Elena turned immediately toward the emergency intercom, her thumb hovering over the red code toggle.
"Julian," Clara murmured, her voice barely an exhalation, so weak it felt like dust against his cheek. "The red dress... in the hallway. Who was she?"

Before Julian could answer or turn toward the frosted glass doors, the monitor flatlined into a shrieking, unbroken tone, and the room was swallowed by chaos.
